Water the Right Thoughts
Small daily wisdom for a calmer, kinder lifeTej
How to Read This Book
This book is not meant to be read in one sitting.
It holds 124 short pieces. Each one begins with something I wrote, and then a page or
two about what it means and what you might do with it. Most take two minutes. A few
take five.
You can start anywhere. The eleven chapters follow a path, from your own thoughts
outward to the people around you and to what holds you up. But no page depends on the
one before it. Open the book where it falls and read that page.
Many pages end with a small thing to try that day. They are all deliberately small.
Say one sentence. Wait ten seconds before you answer. Thank someone late. Nothing here
costs money, and nothing needs a better week than the one you are having.
I have written this in plain English on purpose. Many of the people who read my work
every day do not speak English as a first language. You should never have to stop and
work out a sentence while you are trying to feel something. If a page is not clear,
that is my fault and not yours.
One more thing. You will not agree with all of it, and you do not need to. Take the
pages that help. Leave the rest. A book like this has done its work if you remember one
page a month from now and it changes one small thing about your day.
About These Words
Everything quoted in this book is my own writing, first published on
tejaspatel.me, where I have been writing about these things for years.
A few of the quotes have been lightly shortened here, so they read easily for someone
reading in a second language. The meaning is unchanged.

Back to contentsChapter 1 — Your Thoughts Are Like Plants
Your mind grows whatever you feed it.You did not choose most of the thoughts you had today.
They arrived on their own, and a few were useful, but many were old worries you have had a hundred times before.
The trouble is not that you think too little. It is that you think without choosing.
Tej says our thoughts are like plants. Some we water. Some we leave to dry. You are watering something every day, even when you are not paying attention to it.
The useful part is small and practical. You cannot stop thoughts from arriving. You can decide which ones get your time.
You will meet the same idea in three pictures. Thoughts as plants you water. Thoughts as a radio station you can change. The mind as a vehicle that needs fuel and regular service.
Fifteen pages. Two are longer, and one asks you to close your eyes and do something before you read on.
We start with the radio.
Change the Station
Compare your thoughts to a radio station. You love some songs and there are others you do not love. If you do not enjoy a song, all you need to do is change the station. You do not have to stay bored or upset by songs you do not love. Change your thoughts, mood and feelings by doing what you love to do, and do not let anyone else change your mood and feelings. Live in the present moment, like a king with no money in his pockets.
A song you do not like is playing in a shop, and you did not choose it. You listen for a minute, then you leave, or you simply stop hearing it.
Now think about the last three days inside your head. How many times did the same thought play? The argument you did not win. The money problem. One sentence somebody said to you last year.
You did not choose that song either. It plays because it has played before.
Tej's picture here is a radio. There are many stations. You are listening to one of them. You can move.
At first this sounds too easy, and there is a fair objection. You cannot delete a thought by fighting it. Try not to think about your left hand for ten seconds. Now your left hand is the only thing in the room.
So changing the station is not fighting. It is giving your attention to something else.
Read what he actually says. Change your mood by doing what you love to do. Instead of telling you to think your way to a better mood, he tells you to do something. Cook. Walk. Call the friend who makes you laugh. Play music you chose yourself.
This works because attention holds one thing at a time. Not two. When your hands are busy with something you love, the old song is still playing, but nobody is listening to it.
There is a second half to the quote, and it is the harder one. Do not let anyone else change your mood.
Notice how often this happens. A short reply from a colleague. A driver who pushed in front of you. A relative's comment about your job. Any one of these can own your whole evening. Somebody who is not thinking about you at all has chosen your station for you.
You cannot stop people from being rude. You can notice the moment your station changes, and change it back.
Then the last line, which is the strangest and the best. Live in the present moment, like a king with no money in his pockets.
Read that again. A king with no money. He has nothing in his pocket and he is still a king. It is a picture of a person whose peace does not depend on the day going well.
Most of us do the opposite. We keep our peace in a locked box. The key is held by our bank balance, our health report, and the mood of the people near us. Then we are surprised that we feel poor.
You will not do this perfectly. Nobody does. Some days the sad song plays all afternoon and you only notice at night.
That is fine. Noticing at night is still noticing. Tomorrow you may catch it at noon. Later you catch it in the first minute, and the first minute is where all the power sits.
The station is always playing something. The only question is whether you are the one who chose it.
Watch What You Are Thinking
Watch what you are thinking. Your thoughts can harm you. They can make you feel unsafe, and they can be wrong. Do not blame and judge people. Sometimes we become selfish about our own goals, and we lose friends, family and the people we love. This is life. It has good days and bad days, struggles, hopes and forgiveness. It teaches you the difference between good and bad. Once you understand this, your awareness rises at this very moment, and you become happy and peaceful.
Most of us believe our own thoughts without checking them.
A thought arrives and says: they do not respect you. Another says: you are not good enough for this work. We accept these as facts. They are not facts. They are guesses, and many of them are wrong.
Tej asks for one thing first. Watch them. Not fight them, not argue with them. Just notice what your mind is saying.
A watched thought loses most of its power. You see it, you name it, and it becomes one opinion instead of the truth.
Try this today. Write down one thought that made you feel bad, and ask whether you know it is true.
A Clean Mind Can Focus
Purity of mind, heart, actions and thoughts leads to deep focus. That focus helps you know and see what is happening in your life at this very moment.
Focus is not something you force. It is what remains when the noise is gone.
Think of a day when you were angry at someone in the morning. How much of that day did you really see? You ate without tasting. People spoke and you heard half of it.
Purity here does not mean being perfect. It means not carrying yesterday's dirt into today.
When the mind is clean, you notice what is in front of you. That is all focus is.
Try this today. Before your first task, sit for one minute and do nothing.
Life Becomes a Mirror
In time, life mirrors your thoughts. The law of attraction is very dangerous. It has good and bad effects on your life. Be sure about what you think.
Tej calls the law of attraction dangerous. That word is worth reading twice.
It is dangerous because it works both ways, and the same mind that can hold hope can also practise fear for years. If you rehearse a disaster every night, you become very good at seeing disasters.
This is not a promise that thinking makes things appear. It is simpler than that. What you think about often, you begin to look for. What you look for, you find.
So be careful about what you feed the mind.
Try this today. Notice one fear you repeat, and stop it once.
One Idea Is Enough
It is all inside your mind. Do not think about the situation too much or study it too long. Just give one good idea to your subconscious mind. It will show you the way out.
There is a kind of thinking that looks like work but is not.
You turn the problem over. You imagine ten endings. You explain it to yourself again at two in the morning, and by breakfast you are tired and no closer.
Tej offers a different move. Give your mind one clear idea, then leave it alone. Sleep. Walk. Do something with your hands.
The answer often arrives when you stop hunting for it. That is not laziness. A mind that is not squeezed has room to work.
Try this today. Ask your question once, then leave it alone until tomorrow.
You Can Change
The best part of being human is that we can change. We can cross the limits of imagination. We can see, feel and experience invisible things with the power of the heart and the mind. With meditation we can find peace, reduce anger, be lovable and think clearly. We can bless, love and forgive people, and make things happen the way we want them to be. We are creators, and we are the masterpiece of the universe.
Some people decide early what kind of person they are. Angry. Shy. Bad with money. Then they live inside that one sentence for thirty years.
This page is against that sentence.
Tej says the best part of being human is that we can change. Not slowly become better at pretending. Change.
You have already done it once, and you are not the person you were at fifteen. Nobody had to give you permission then, and nobody has to give it now.
Try this today. Name one thing you say about yourself, and ask when you decided it.
Delete What You Do Not Need
Understand which thoughts are not needed, and delete them. They only waste your time. Then you will know why you are feeling the way you feel.
Some thoughts do a job. Most do not.
There is a whole group of thoughts that only take your time. Old arguments. Things you cannot change. What a person meant by a short message. Notice how tired you feel after ten minutes of these.
Tej uses the word delete. It is a good word, because it names a decision and not a feeling. You do not have to win the argument in your head. You can close it.
When the useless thoughts are gone, the reason you feel low is much easier to see.
Try this today. Choose one repeating thought and delete it. Say so out loud.
Five Minutes With Your Eyes Closed
Close your eyes. Picture all your pain, bad energy and negative thoughts leaving your mind and body. You are becoming lighter and lighter. Your mind is becoming still and calm. You feel good in your heart and you enjoy this moment. You are smiling and remembering happy moments from your past. You are grateful for all the things you have. You want to do something good for the world, for your family and for the people you love. You are focused on your goals and you follow your intuition. You know the road you will travel.
This page is not for reading. It is for doing. Find five quiet minutes and a pen.
Sit down. Close your eyes. Breathe slowly. Follow the quote above, one line at a time, and stay with each line until you can see it.
Then open your eyes and answer these questions. Short answers are enough. Nobody else will read them.
What heavy feeling left you during those five minutes?
Which happy moment from your past came back to you?
Name three things you are grateful for today.
What is one thing you want to do for your family, or for the world?
Why write it down? A thought in your head changes shape and slips away. A thought on paper stays still. Read this page again in a month, and you will see what was true.
Update Your Thoughts
A computer needs software updates and better hardware. People need the same. Update your thoughts with what you learned during the day. Upgrade your mind, and you will have a great future ahead.
A phone that is never updated still works. It just slowly stops fitting the world around it.
People are the same. You learn something at twenty and never open that file again. At forty you are still using an answer that stopped being true years ago.
Tej's idea here is small and daily. Ask what today taught you. Then change one belief to match it.
An upgrade of the mind is never dramatic, only one old idea replaced, and then another after it.
Try this today. Write one sentence: what did today teach me?
The World Outside Follows the World Inside
Your whole world lies within you. The outside world is a picture of what is happening inside. Clean your inner world with love, light, prayer, happiness, peace and gratitude. Forgive your enemies. Love your neighbours more than yourself. Share your good thoughts, your happiness and your success. Do not discuss people. Discuss ideas for a better life. You will be amazed to see the world change for you. We are meant to live a great life. The power lies within you. Before you turn on that power switch in your heart, forgive everyone, and be grateful for your parents, your friends, your love and your life.
Two people walk through the same market. One sees noise and rude people. The other sees a busy day and a man selling fruit. Same market.
That is what Tej means. The world you see is coloured by what you carry.
He then gives a list, and it is a list of work, not of wishes. Forgive your enemies. Share what you have. Discuss ideas and not people.
Notice the order at the end. Forgive first, be grateful, then the power turns on. You cannot jump to the last step.
Try this today. Forgive one person in your heart, without telling them.
Your Thoughts Are Like Plants
Our thoughts are like plants. We have to decide which ones we pour water on, and which ones we leave to dry.
Look at a plant somebody has kept alive for years. Nobody worked hard at it. They gave it a little water, often, without thinking much about it.
Now look at a dead one in the same house. Nobody killed it. They simply stopped.
Tej says it in two sentences, and the idea needs no more room than that. Your thoughts are like plants. You decide which ones you water.
Watering a thought is simple. You water it by giving it your time.
You water a worry by telling the story again to a friend. You water an insult by repeating it to yourself in bed. You water a hope by writing it down, by saying it out loud, by taking one small step towards it today.
Nothing else is needed. Attention is the water.
This explains something that confuses people. They ask why a small comment from years ago still hurts, while a real kindness from last week is already forgotten. The answer is not mysterious. One was watered daily for years. The other got one minute, and nobody returned to it.
The second half is harder to accept. Some plants you have to leave to dry.
We do not like this. It feels cold. If a thought is true, we believe we owe it our attention. Somebody really was unfair to you. The loss really did happen. It feels wrong to walk past that plant with the water and not stop.
But true is not the same as useful. A thought can be completely true, and still take from you every day, and give nothing back.
Leaving it to dry is not lying to yourself. It is a decision not to feed it. You do not argue with it. You do not tell the story a fifth time. You let it stand there without water, and slowly it takes less room.
Here is the part most people miss. The ground is not empty while you do this.
If you only stop watering the bad plants, the ground stays bare, and something will grow there anyway. Something always grows. So plant on purpose. Choose two or three thoughts you want to be bigger in a year, and give them a little water every day.
They can be small and ordinary. I am learning. My family is worth my patience. This work matters, even when nobody says so.
Do not expect a feeling to arrive on the first day. Plants do not work that way, and neither does this. You water, and nothing happens, and you water again. For weeks it looks like nothing. Then one morning you notice you did not have the old thought at all today, and you did not even try.
That is what growth looks like from the inside. Quiet, slow, and mostly invisible until it is done.
You are already a gardener. You have been watering something every day for years, whether you chose it or not.
Look at what is growing. Then decide what gets the water tomorrow.
The Answers Are Already Inside
All the answers lie within you. To know them, calm your mind and feel the happiness inside you.
When we do not know what to do, we ask everybody. Friends, family, the internet. We collect ten opinions and feel worse than before.
Often you already knew. You knew in the first minute. The noise came later.
Tej says calm the mind and the answer is there. This is not magic. A loud mind cannot hear itself. A quiet one can.
So ask your question, then be quiet for a while. Notice which answer stays with you when nobody is talking.
Try this today. Ask your question, then sit quietly for five minutes with no phone.
Clear Your Mind, Then Feel
Clear your mind. Purify your heart. Feel the love within you. You will feel deep peace.
This is the shortest instruction in the chapter, and it has an order.
Clear the mind first. Then the heart. Only then do you feel anything.
Most of us try it the other way. We wait to feel peaceful while the mind is still full and the heart is still angry. Then we decide that peace is not for people like us.
Nothing needs to be added here. Something needs to be removed.
Try this today. Release one small thing you are still holding from this week.
The Mind Needs Service
Pouring good thoughts into your mind is like pouring fuel into a vehicle. For the mind to work well, it also needs regular care and service.
A vehicle does not fail on the day it stops. It fails after months without care.
Tej says the mind runs the same way. Good thoughts are the fuel. Rest, quiet and honesty are the service.
Most people never service the mind. They drive it every day, fill it with news and worry, and are surprised when it makes a strange sound.
You do not need a long holiday for this, only small and regular care. Ten minutes counts.
Try this today. Give your mind ten quiet minutes, the way you would clean a machine you depend on.
Choose the Thoughts You Keep
Someone rightly said, "Thoughts become things." Think hard and decide which thoughts you want to keep in your mind. Let your priorities guide you. Then hold those thoughts every second, and they will pull what you want towards you like a magnet. The process is simple. People make it hard by thinking about the past and carrying old pain. Clear your mind, believe in yourself, and do not doubt the process. Follow your intuition. It is the light that guides you to what you want in life.
Not every thought deserves a place in your mind.
Tej asks you to choose on purpose, and to use your priorities to choose. What matters to you this year? Which thoughts serve that? Which ones are only old pain you carry from room to room?
Then he says the process is simple, and people make it hard. That is honest. The hard part is not learning the method. The hard part is stopping the return to the past.
Intuition is his last word here. It is the quiet answer that does not shout. Follow it.
Try this today. Name one thought you will keep this month, and one you will leave.
Back to contentsChapter 2 — Be Your Own Best Friend
Liking yourself is where everything starts. There is a person you speak to more than anyone else. You never see them. You only hear them.
That voice inside you has been talking all day. It comments on how you look, on what you said, on the thing you got wrong last week. For many people that voice is harsh. It says things they would never say to a friend.
That voice can change. It learned its tone over many years of practice, and it can learn a different one.
Liking yourself is not pride. It is not thinking you are better than other people. It is the decision to stop being your own enemy. Everything else in this book rests on it. It is hard to be kind to others while you are at war with yourself.
Becoming a new person is not the aim. You already know your whole story. You know what you have survived, and nobody else does.
Eighteen pages here. They ask you to speak to yourself the way you already speak to people you love.
Say It Without Trying to Impress
Express love from your heart, without thinking of impressing anyone. Be a genuine person, with positive thoughts and positive actions. That is what makes life feel full. Be grateful to God for giving this wonderful life.
Think about how you speak when you are trying to impress someone. The words get bigger. The voice changes. You watch their face to see if it worked.
Now think about how you speak to a person you trust completely. Plain words. No performance. You are not watching their face at all.
The second way is easier. It is also the more attractive way, because people can feel when they are being sold something.
Tej ends with gratitude, and it belongs here. It is hard to be false and grateful at the same time.
Try this today. Say one thing in plain words, without trying to sound impressive.
You Know the Whole Story
You are the only one who knows the whole story of your life. Respect and love yourself for what progress you have made in your life, from what it was before.
Other people see one part of your life. They see this year, or this week, or one bad hour.
You see all of it. You know the year you barely survived. You know what you were afraid of at fifteen. You know the habit you stopped, and how much it cost you to stop it.
So when someone judges you quickly, remember what they are working with. A very small piece of information.
And when you judge yourself, use the full story. Compare yourself with the person you were before, not with the person standing next to you.
Try this today. Name one way you are better now than five years ago.
Two Things Nobody Can Take
Self respect and self esteem are the true assets of a human being. They build love for yourself and help you overcome loneliness. Problems come and go. Events come and go. But love and pride for yourself remain, when you have self respect and self esteem.
Money can leave. Work can leave. People can leave.
Tej calls self respect and self esteem your true assets. An asset is something you own. You own these two, and nobody can take them without your agreement.
Notice what he says they do. They build love for yourself, and they help you when you are alone. That is the real test. Anyone can feel fine in a full room. Self respect is what you still have at eleven at night, in an empty room, with nobody there to remind you of it.
Problems come and go. This stays.
Try this today. Write down one thing you did this year that you respect yourself for.
Sitting Alone in a Quiet Place
Believe in yourself. Respect, love and be honest with yourself. Whenever you sit alone in a quiet place, keep saying good things to yourself. Feel good and be grateful for what you have. Think about your successes. Feel proud of what you were and what you have achieved. Do this often and it will give you the courage to face anything.
Quiet time usually gets spent reviewing mistakes. The room is silent, so the voice gets louder.
Tej suggests using the same time differently. Sit alone and say good things to yourself instead. Not big claims. Simple true ones. I handled that well. I stayed calm. I am still here.
It will feel strange for the first week. That is normal. You are speaking to someone who has not heard a kind word from you in a very long time.
He says doing this often builds courage. Courage is not a feeling you are born with. It is built by repeating something, like any other skill.
Try this today. Sit alone for two minutes and say three true good things about yourself.
Walk With a Calm Confidence
Walk on the road with a humble attitude, confidence, a lovable nature, and full focus. Feel good about yourself, about people, life, nature and the world. I am sure the world would respect this attitude. It would say: enjoy the world, it belongs to you. Shape it the way you want it.
Watch how people walk. Some walk as if they are sorry for the space they use. Some walk as if they expect a fight.
Tej describes a third way. Humble, confident, warm, and fully focused. Those four do not fight each other. A person can be humble and sure at the same time.
He says the world will respect that, and will tell you the world belongs to you. Read that as an invitation, not a promise. The world rarely hands anyone anything. But it does move aside for a person who is calm and not asking for permission.
Try this today. Walk somewhere with your head level and your shoulders low.
Sing Your Own Song
You are always the one listening to the songs you sing. Do not expect others to listen to what you are singing. Sing the song of life you wish to sing. Talk to yourself and find the answer.
Keep his picture here, because it is a good one. You are always the one listening to the song you sing.
Nobody else hears your thoughts all day. You do. If the song is complaint, you are the one who hears every word of it.
He turns it outward too. Do not expect other people to listen to your song either. They have their own song playing, and that is not cruelty, only the way people are made.
So sing the one you want to hear. Then talk to yourself and find your answer, because you are already the main listener.
Try this today. Notice the song in your head, and change one line of it.
Time Spent on Yourself
It is always better to invest time in yourself, than to talk about things that hardly matter to you. Our life is short. Why not invest time in good things, which leave you satisfied and not frustrated.
There is a simple question that saves years. Does this matter to me?
Much of the day goes to things that fail that question. News about people we will never meet. Arguments about things that will not change. Long talk about someone else's choices.
Tej says life is short, so put the time into yourself instead. Learn something. Move your body. Repair the thing you keep avoiding.
He gives a clean test. Does this leave you satisfied, or frustrated? You usually know the answer one minute after you start.
Try this today. Take twenty minutes you would have spent on other people's business, and use it on yourself.
Their Opinion, Your Opinion
You are not responsible for what others think about you. You are responsible for what you think about yourself. You are also responsible for what you made others think about you. Love, without any condition, all those who have made your life more beautiful and meaningful.
This quote does two things, and the second one is harder.
First it releases you. What another person thinks about you is happening inside their head, and you were never asked into that room to correct it.
Then it hands something back. You are responsible for what you think about yourself. That opinion is yours, and you have been writing it for years.
He adds a third part, which is fair. You are also responsible for what you made others think. Not their conclusion. Your evidence.
Try this today. Write the sentence you most often say about yourself, and ask if it is true.
Loneliness as a Friend
Loneliness has always been a friend of mine. It helped me discover who I am.
There is a difference between being alone and feeling lonely, and it takes most of us years to learn it.
Being alone is a fact. Nobody is in the room.
Feeling lonely is something else. It can happen in an empty room, and it can happen at a table with eight people who like you.
Tej says loneliness has always been a friend of his. That is a strange sentence at first. Loneliness is the thing everyone works to avoid. We fill every quiet minute with a screen, a call, a noise. An empty evening feels like a problem to solve.
But look at what he says it did for him. It helped him discover who he is.
You cannot learn that in company. In company you are partly the person the company expects. With your family you are one version. At work you are another. With old friends you become who you were at twenty. None of these are false. They are only partial.
Remove all of them and something is left. That remaining part is you.
Few of us ever meet it, because we never sit still long enough. The moment the room goes quiet, the phone appears. So the person who is left when nobody is watching stays a stranger for a whole life.
Here is what usually happens if you stay in the quiet.
The first ten minutes are uncomfortable. Old thoughts arrive. Things you did wrong. Things somebody said. This is where nearly everyone stops, and it is also why loneliness has a bad name. People meet the noise at the door and never see the room behind it.
If you stay longer, the noise settles. Then quieter things begin to speak. What you actually want. What you have been pretending is fine. Which people leave you tired, and which people leave you full.
None of that has room to speak while somebody is talking to you.
He calls it a friend, and the word is chosen with care. A friend is not always comfortable. A friend tells you the true thing at the wrong moment. Loneliness does that. It asks the questions you have been avoiding, and it does not accept a quick answer.
There is a practical side too. If you cannot be alone, every relationship you have carries extra weight. You need those people to stop you feeling something. That is a heavy job to hand a friend, and it was never something they agreed to carry. When you can sit alone without fear, you choose people because you like them, not because you cannot manage without them.
This is not an argument for staying away from people. His whole book pushes the other way. It is an argument for being able to be alone, so that your time with people is a choice.
You could start small. An hour with no screen. A walk with no music. One evening where you do not fill the silence.
You will not enjoy the first attempt. Almost nobody does.
But somewhere in that quiet, a person is waiting to meet you. You have lived with them your whole life and never once sat down together.
Forgive Yourself First
One of the best gifts you can give to your soul is loving and forgiving yourself.
Most people forgive others faster than they forgive themselves.
You can excuse a friend for the same mistake you still blame yourself for from four years ago. You knew their reasons. You gave them room. You gave yourself none.
Tej calls loving and forgiving yourself a gift to your soul. Notice that it is a gift, not a reward. A reward has to be earned. A gift is given because the giver decided to give it.
Nobody is asking you to agree that what you did was fine. You only have to stop paying for it every single day.
Try this today. Choose one old mistake and stop charging yourself for it.
Love Yourself First
I am loving myself at the moment. I will speak to you later. I am sure only a few people stay near me when I am not at my best. So it is better to love myself first, before loving others. If I do not value myself, I should not feel bad when others do not either. I love what my own love does for my life.
There is something almost funny about the first two lines. He is busy, and the appointment is with himself.
Most of us would never say that. We treat time with ourselves as the first thing to cancel.
Then he says something quieter. Only a few people stay near you when you are not at your best. There is no bitterness in it. Most adults have watched it happen at least once, usually at a time when they needed people most.
So he begins with himself. If he does not value himself, he cannot ask other people to fill the gap.
Try this today. Keep one small appointment with yourself, and do not cancel it.
You Do Not Have to Search for It
Keep the good work going. You do not need to search for love and respect from others. Love and respect yourself first, and others will do the same.
Searching for respect from other people is tiring work, and the strange part is that it never actually ends. You receive it on Monday and you need it again on Thursday.
Tej closes that door gently. You do not need to search. Begin with your own respect, and the rest follows.
This sounds like a trick, but it is mostly practical. People take their reading of you from you. If you treat yourself as somebody worth hearing, they usually agree. If you say sorry for existing, they usually agree with that too.
Try this today. Stop before you say sorry, and check whether you did anything wrong.
Be the Person You Are
Be the person you are. Do not behave like someone you are not, only to impress others. Your true self will be seen sooner or later. The simple way is to be who you are, and to stay with people who accept you as you are.
Pretending is expensive. You have to remember which version of you each person met.
His warning is simple. Your true self will be seen. Not because somebody catches you, but because nobody can hold a performance for years. It leaks on a tired day.
The other half is more useful. Stay with people who accept you as you are. Not people who merely allow you. People who like the actual person.
Those people exist, and you will not find them while you are pretending to be somebody else. They cannot see you, so they cannot choose you.
Try this today. Drop one small act you perform around one person.
Help Yourself First
Help yourself before helping others. Change yourself before changing others. Love yourself before loving others. Respect yourself before respecting others. You cannot give anything to anybody without having something to give. First give everything your soul needs, then share the rest with others. Practise this every day and you will feel calm, peaceful and loving.
Think of a person you know who helps everybody.
They answer every call. They lend money they need themselves. They sit with a friend at midnight and then work at seven. Everyone says they are wonderful. And if you look closely, they are tired in a way that sleep does not repair.
This quote is written for that person, and it says the thing they usually refuse to hear. Help yourself before helping others.
He repeats the same shape four times, and the repetition is the argument. Help, change, love, respect. Each one before, not instead of.
Then he gives the reason in one plain line. You cannot give anything to anybody without having something to give.
That is not a moral rule. It is arithmetic.
Yet many good people try to break it. They give from a supply that is already empty, and then feel guilty that the help was thin. You have probably done it. You listened to a friend's trouble while your own head was full. You were present in the room and absent everywhere else. They could feel it, and you knew they could.
There is a reason people do this, and it is worth naming without shame. Helping others is easier than facing yourself. Other people's problems come with clear tasks. Yours do not. So the day fills with useful work for everyone else, and the hard private thing waits another year.
His instruction is stronger than most people expect. First give everything your soul needs, then share the rest. Everything. Not what is left over.
That will feel wrong to read if you were taught to put yourself last. Stay with the discomfort for a moment, because he is not asking you to care less about anyone. He is asking where the care comes from.
So what does your soul need? The answer is usually plain and physical. Sleep. Food you do not eat while standing. An hour that belongs to nobody. A conversation you keep delaying. Time outside. Something you make with your hands.
Nothing there is selfish. It is what a person runs on.
There is a quieter line in the middle, about changing people. Change yourself before changing others. Most attempts to change another person fail, and they usually damage the relationship on the way. But a person who changes in front of you is very hard to ignore. It is the one argument that creates no defence.
The same is true of respect. People who do not respect themselves teach others how to treat them, without ever meaning to.
He ends with what happens if you practise this every day. Calm. Peace. A loving state of mind. Read the order once more. The calm is a result, not a starting condition.
You will not become selfish by doing this. That is not who you are, and one hour of sleep will not change it.
You are only making sure there is something in your hands before you hold them out.
You Already Have What You Need
You have a mind for thinking, a heart for loving, God for power and a soul for self belief. No excuse at all. Use them all in the best way to overcome your problems.
This one is a list, and he means it as an inventory.
A mind for thinking. A heart for loving. God for power. A soul for self belief.
Then the short line: no excuse at all. He is not being harsh. He is saying you are not empty. Whatever stands in front of you, you did not arrive with nothing.
On the hardest days that is worth remembering. You may have very little in your pocket. You still have a mind that can plan, a heart that can care, and something steady under both.
Use them, he says. That is all.
Try this today. Name which of the four you have been forgetting.
You Are Not a Product
Be yourself and behave the way you are. You are not a product that needs unfair marketing to raise its demand. You are like a service. If you do your best to serve people, they will choose your service to make their life good. All you have to do is improve. Learn from your mistakes, listen to what people tell you, and serve better than before.
He uses a business picture here, and it works.
A product needs marketing. It needs a loud claim, because the box has to be sold before it is opened. A service is different. A service is judged after people use it.
You are the second kind. Nobody decides about you from your description. They decide from what it is actually like to spend an ordinary afternoon in your company.
That removes the pressure from the claim and puts it on the practice. So he says: improve. Learn from your mistakes. Listen to what people tell you. Serve better than before.
Try this today. Ask one person for one honest piece of feedback.
No Storm Can Change You
No storm can change me. I will stand there like a pillar, and no one can destroy my character. Being me makes things go the way I like. I find peace within me and I know where I am going. I am too busy to think about what you think of me. For me no day is wasted. I enjoy every single day with love, peace and gratitude.
Read this one aloud. It is written as a declaration, not a description.
The pillar is his picture, and it is a good one. A pillar does not fight the storm. It does not argue with the wind. It only refuses to move, and the storm passes.
Notice how much of the quote is about attention. He is too busy to think about what you think of him. Not angry about it. Busy.
That is what peace looks like from outside. Not a person who won the argument. A person who no longer needs to have it.
Try this today. Let one comment about you pass without answering it.
You Do Not Have to Perform
I love to be me. I do not have to dress well, or wear make up, to show people what I am not. In fact, it is easy for me to say what I mean and mean what I say. I do not mind whether people accept me the way I am or not. I am here in this beautiful world to build such a bond with you. You will find it hard to forget me in your whole life.
There is a kind of tiredness that comes from being watched.
You choose clothes for the watcher. You choose words for the watcher. By evening you have spent the whole day managing an audience that was barely looking at you anyway.
Tej describes the other way. Say what you mean and mean what you say, without thinking a lot. That last part matters. Honesty is faster.
His final line is the reason it matters. He wants a bond you will find hard to forget. Nobody remembers a well managed image. People remember the one who was real with them.
Try this today. Leave the house once without checking how you look.
Back to contentsChapter 3 — Choose the People Around You
You slowly become the people you spend time with.Think of the five people you talk to most. Their habits are already inside you.
This is not a warning. It is simply how people work. We copy the people near us. We copy their words, their mood, their view of what is possible. Nobody decides to do this. It happens quietly, over years.
But copying is not the same as being trapped. You get to decide who gets your time and your heart, and that decision is yours to make more than once. That is not a cruel act. It is care.
Some pages here will ask you to step back from someone. Read them slowly. They do not say that people are bad. Most people are good. They say that you get a say in who stands close to you.
The other half matters more. When you make room, good people can enter it, and that keeps happening at every age, for the whole of your life.
Thirteen pages. Some ask you to stay closer. Some ask you to stand further back. Every one of them hands the choice to you.
The Simple Test
Stay with those who make you feel good when you think about them.
There is a test in that sentence, and you can run it right now.
Think of a person. Then watch what happens in your body. Some names make your shoulders drop a little. Other names make your chest tighten before you even know why.
Your body answers faster than your mind. It has been keeping score for years.
This is not a full judgement of anyone. A good person can still be hard work at this point in your life, and that says nothing against them. The test only shows where your peace is.
Notice the answer. You do not have to act on it today. Just stop calling it nothing.
Try this today. Name one person whose memory makes you calm. Send them a message.
You Copy the People Near You
Be around good, positive and successful people. You would eventually become like them.
Nobody plans to change. It happens by copying.
You copy the words your friends use. You copy their view of hard work. You copy what they treat as normal. If everyone near you says that nothing ever works here, that slowly becomes a fact in your head.
Success is partly a set of habits. Habits spread from person to person. So do complaints.
You cannot always choose your family or your office. You can choose who you sit with at lunch, and whose voice you hear most.
Try this today. Spend twenty minutes with the most positive person you know.
Why Some Friendships End
Sometimes we have to leave a person, even when we spent wonderful time with him. We all learn from our mistakes. We gain experience with time. You drift away from those who will not learn from their mistakes and do not want to change. When we meet them, we see our own past, and it drains our energy. We are not stuck in the past. We cannot be the same person we were before. Change is needed to be a better person.
This is one of the sadder pages in the book. Read it slowly.
He is not describing a fight. There is no bad person here. He says the time you spent together was wonderful, and that stays true forever.
What changed is you. You learned something. They did not want to. Now every meeting returns you to the person you used to be, and that costs you energy.
This is not betrayal. It is distance, and distance is allowed.
You can leave a door open and still stand further away from it.
Try this today. Think of one old friendship you feel guilty about. Forgive yourself for the distance.
Do Not Compare Your Story
If your life is a heavy load or a hard road, do not blame others. Do not compare your life with theirs. Everyone has their own story. We have to make our own choices for a better life. I do not regret cutting my past links, which were draining my energy. I am happy to stay with people of my kind, who always make me believe there is something great inside me.
Comparing is the fastest way to feel poor.
You see a friend's easy year and hold your hard one next to it, and yours suddenly looks like a failure. But you are comparing your inside with their outside. You know every worry in your own week. You know almost nothing about theirs.
The second half is braver. He cut links that were draining him, and he does not regret it.
Notice the word he chooses. Draining. Not evil. Not wrong. Draining.
Some people take energy the way a crack takes water. Nobody is to blame for that. It is still true.
Try this today. Name one person who leaves you tired every time. Just notice it.
The People You Can Relax With
Stay around those who make you feel yourself. Do not waste your time and energy on others who block your growth.
There are people near whom you become smaller.
You choose your words with care, and you check their face before you speak in case something lands wrong. You leave and feel tired, and you cannot say why. Nothing bad was said. You were acting the whole time.
Then there are people near whom you forget yourself. You say the wrong thing and it does not matter. You are quiet and nobody asks what is wrong.
That second feeling is rare. When you find it, protect it. Answer those messages first.
Try this today. Reply to the friend you can be yourself with, before you reply to anyone else.
Ego and Silence
Relationships usually die from ego and from a lack of talking. A person who criticises always, and looks for faults in every person, will damage his relationships sooner or later. When there is no love and no understanding between two people, the relationship cannot last. We have to praise the good qualities of another person. All we need is life in every relationship, and not relationships in our life.
Most relationships do not end in a fight. They end in silence.
One person waits for the other to write first. A week passes. Then a month. Neither of them is angry any more. Both are waiting, and waiting looks the same as not caring.
He names the two killers. Ego and no talking. They work together. Ego makes you wait. Silence makes the other person believe you left.
The repair is small, and it feels far too small. One message. No account of who was wrong.
Try this today. Write to one person you stopped talking to for no real reason.
Look for Respect First
Look for people who respect each other's thoughts, values and feelings, and stay around them. These friends will help you build a good character and a positive attitude towards your life.
Respect is easier to see than kindness, and it is a better test.
Watch how a person treats someone who can do nothing for them. Watch what they do when you disagree with them. Do they listen, or do they wait for their turn to talk?
A group with respect in it is quiet about that. Nobody is made small so the others can laugh, and nobody's belief is treated as a joke. You can say a half-formed idea there.
You do not build character alone. You build it near people, and it takes their shape.
Try this today. Watch how one friend treats a stranger. That is your answer.
Name Your Few
Move away from every unhealthy relationship. Attach yourself with your whole heart, and forever, to those without whom your life has no meaning.
This quote gives two instructions. People only ever hear the first one.
Yes, step back from what harms you. But the second half is the real work. Attach fully, and for life, to the few people your life needs.
Most of us do neither. We keep a thin link with everybody, and give our whole heart to nobody. It feels safe. It is a slow kind of loneliness.
Name those few people. There will be very few. Then treat them like the small number they are.
Try this today. Name your few. Tell one of them what they mean to you.
The Ones Who Try
Those people who make no effort to understand you are the ones who do not deserve to be your friends.
Friendship is measured in effort, not in words.
Effort is asking a second question. Effort is remembering the thing that worried you last month. Effort is answering, even late, even briefly.
Some people are warm in the room and absent everywhere else. You explain yourself to them again and again. Each time you start from zero.
At some point, stop explaining. Not with anger. Just stop, and see who asks you what happened.
Those are your friends. The list is often shorter than you hoped, and stronger than you feared.
Try this today. Ask one person about a thing they told you weeks ago.
Trust Slowly
Wait, and have patience. You will see the true nature of people. Trust and respect yourself. Do not share your personal problems with anyone until you know them well. Do not fully trust a person you have just met.
Read this as advice about speed, not about people.
He is not saying that people are bad. He is saying that time tells the truth about a person, and there is no way to rush it. A new person shows you their best week first. That is normal. You do it too.
So trust in steps. Share a small thing. See how it is held. Then share a little more.
This keeps you open, which is the whole point. You still meet everyone. You simply do not hand your hardest story to someone in the first month.
Try this today. Give one new person a small piece of trust. Watch how they hold it.
People Can Change Just Like Seasons
Do not blindly trust any new person you meet. If you already have good friends, do not go searching for new ones, and do not let a friend become an enemy. People can change, just like seasons. Stay with those who you think will not leave you. People come and go in your life, and you do not have to worry about why they left. Enjoy the time you spend with a friend who knows everything about you and understands what friendship means.
Think of a friend you no longer speak to. Not one who hurt you. One who simply moved away from you, slowly, across a year or two.
Now try to name the day it ended. You cannot. There was no day.
This is what he means by seasons. Summer does not end on a Tuesday. It thins. One morning is cooler, then another one is, and then you are wearing a jacket and cannot say when that started.
People change in the same quiet way. A friend gets a new job, a new city, a new set of worries. Nothing was decided against you. The weather changed.
Most of the pain of a lost friendship is not the loss. It is the question. What did I do? Why did they stop? We read old messages again, searching for our mistake. Usually there is no mistake to find. A season ended.
He says you do not have to worry about why they left. That is not coldness. That is rest. You are allowed to stop searching.
Now the harder line, and it needs care. He says that if you already have good friends, do not go searching for new ones.
That sounds closed. Read it again. He is warning you against hunting, not against meeting.
Hunting looks like this. You feel a little empty, so you look for someone new to fill the space. You hand your whole story to a person you met three weeks ago, because new attention feels like a warm room. Then you are surprised when it does not hold you.
Meeting is a different thing, and it never stops. Good people keep arriving. A colleague turns out to be steady. A neighbour becomes the person you call first. Someone you have known for nine years quietly becomes family. None of that is hunting. That is the door standing open, and it should stay open.
None of this is asking you to be suspicious. Suspicion is tiring, and it blocks the right people just as well as the wrong ones.
He is asking you to feed what already grows. The old friend who knows everything about you cannot be replaced. You cannot build ten years of history with someone new, however much you like them. That history is the whole value of the thing. It is also easy to lose, because it never asks for attention until it is gone.
And there is his last warning. Do not let a friend become an enemy. Nearly every enemy in a life began as somebody close. Distance is fine. Silence is fine. A war is expensive, and it is usually built out of one bad afternoon that the two of you would describe differently.
Winter is not the end of a garden. Leave the ground ready, in case a friend walks back into it one spring.
The Wall Is Only As Tall As Your Attention
Haters will only stay around haters, and they all have the same mission. They want to keep barriers on the road of anyone who could win. They place barrier after barrier by passing negativity. They know they cannot be winners themselves. They want you to stay at their level, but winners are busy every day, moving to the next level.
You tell someone about a plan. Nothing huge. You want to study at night, or open a small shop, or walk every morning.
Watch the first three seconds of their face. Not the words. The face comes first, and the face is honest.
Some faces open. Some faces close.
He says that haters stay around haters. That sounds like an insult until you watch it happen. Look at any group that spends its hours on complaints. Nobody there is building anything. The complaining is the activity. It is what holds the group together.
Now think about what your plan does to that group. If you try, and it works, they have a problem. Your success would mean their reasons were wrong. It is much easier for them to keep you where you are.
They do not do this openly. Almost nobody says stop. They say something smaller. Are you sure? My cousin tried that. You will be tired of it in a month. Each sentence is small. Ten of them are a wall.
Here is the useful part. This is not about you. Read that twice, because the rest depends on it. A person who blocks your road is not judging your plan. They are protecting their own explanation for their own life. You are simply standing near it.
That is why arguing does not work. You cannot argue a person out of something that keeps them comfortable. You will spend a whole evening explaining your idea, win nothing, and lose the evening.
Be careful here, though. This idea is easy to use badly.
Not everyone who doubts you is a hater. Some people who question you love you very much, and they are frightened for you rather than against you. Your mother asking how you will pay for it is not a hater. A friend who names the real risks is not a hater. That person is standing beside you, looking at the same road.
The difference is easy to see once you look for it. A worried friend asks questions, and then helps you answer them. A hater states a conclusion and never returns to the subject. One of them wants you safe. The other wants you still.
If you call every doubter a hater, you will be alone with your worst ideas, with nobody left who cares enough to argue.
So do the quiet thing instead. Stop giving details to the closed faces. You owe nobody a plan. Tell the two or three people who ask good questions. The rest can learn about it later, when it is done.
His strongest line is the last one. Winners are busy. Not fighting. Busy. Every hour you spend proving them wrong is an hour taken from the work, and the work is the only real answer.
The wall they build is real. It is also only as tall as the time you spend looking at it.
The Screen Is Not the Room
Facebook is a virtual world. Be here to feel good and to release stress, without expecting too much. Take it as a way to gain knowledge and share your views. Take it as a learning tool. Stay in touch with people there, but your real life does not depend on networks and computers. It depends on what you do outside your comfort zone.
A screen is very good at one thing. It shows you people who look fine.
You can talk to two hundred people there and be known by none of them. Nobody online sees you tired. Nobody there brings food when you are ill.
He is not telling you to leave. He calls it a learning tool, and it is a good one. Just remember which world holds your life.
The people who will sit with you in a hospital are the people you have sat with. That is built in rooms, in person, over years.
Try this today. Move one online conversation to a phone call.
Back to contentsChapter 4 — Put Down the Heavy Bag
Forgiving is something you do for yourself. Some of what was done to you was not small. It was not your fault. It was not sent to teach you a lesson.
Forgiving does not ask you to say otherwise.
It asks one question only. What does it cost you to keep carrying it?
Anger is heavy. It wakes you at night. It plays the same scene again and again, and the other person is not even there. You do all the work of remembering. They do nothing.
Forgiving is how you set the bag down. It is not a gift to the person who hurt you. It does not mean the harm was fine. And it does not mean you must see them again. You can forgive someone and still stay far away. Both things are allowed.
Some pages here will help you today. Some may not. If you are not ready, you have not failed. Read them, and come back when you want to.
Twelve pages. Two of them are longer. None of them are in a hurry.
When They Cannot Hear You
Sometimes we cannot tell the truth. The person doing wrong to us is in no state to listen. He may blame you and make a small thing bigger. All we can do is bless them and do what we need to do. Let him do what he wants. Free advice is not always welcome. Worrying about what he did to you will not help you. Leave everything to God. He is there to look after everybody.
There are people you cannot explain yourself to. You have the words ready. They are fair words. But the other person is angry, and each word you say becomes proof of something else.
Tej is honest about this. Sometimes the talk is not possible. That is not your failure.
So you stop trying to be understood by that one person, and you do your own work instead. You keep your side clean. The truth does not stop being true because they refused to hear it.
Try this today. Stop rewriting one old argument in your head. Say it aloud once to yourself, then leave it.
Begin Again in the Morning
Do not keep remembering your past. Make a new beginning every day by doing something new, different and good. Live in the present with love, peace and gratitude. Your habits and actions should come from the lessons you learned from past mistakes. We are all students, and we learn lessons every day. Sometimes we fail, and sometimes we score good marks. Keep smiling, be happy, and make others feel important in your life.
Yesterday is finished. That sounds simple, and it is very hard to do.
Notice what he asks for. Not that you forget the past. He asks that your habits come from the lessons in it, and that is the difference between learning and carrying. A lesson makes you lighter. A grudge makes you heavier.
He calls us students. Students are allowed to fail some days and do well on others. Nobody removes you from the class for one bad result.
Try this today. Name one lesson from an old hurt. Then close the day there.
Free Yourself From Old Baggage
Remove old beliefs which you are carrying since your childhood. People blindly follow things without knowing the truth. Free yourself from old baggage. Keep the beliefs which make a real difference to your character, and to the life you are living now.
Some of the weight is not even yours. You were handed it as a child. That family never forgives. Those people cannot be trusted. Never let anyone see you cry.
Nobody asked whether you agreed. You were small, and you took it.
Tej calls this old baggage. It is a good word for it. A bag you have carried so long that you no longer feel it.
You are allowed to open it now, as an adult, and choose what stays.
Try this today. Name one rule about people that you were taught, not one you chose.
Their Life Is Not Your Work
We are all here on this beautiful earth to be what we want to be. Do not watch other people's lives and carry grudges. If we live this way, we find that these same people help us reach where we want to go. We are all children of God, and we are one.
A grudge needs watching to stay alive. You have to check what they are doing, see who they are with, and notice whether they look happy.
That is work. It is unpaid, and it is done in your own hours.
Tej says you came here to become what you want to be. Every hour you spend watching them is an hour not spent on that.
Then he says something surprising. Stop watching, and some of those people help you later. Not all of them. But more than you expect.
Try this today. Do not check on one person for a whole day.
The Good You Did Is Not Lost
Any good deed you do for others is always remembered by them. Those people may have hurt you and left you. But that small thing you did will help them see their mistake in your absence. It is great to accept someone's mistake. It is greater to forgive it.
Think of someone you helped for a long time, who then hurt you and left.
You gave them your time. You answered the phone late at night. You lent money, or told the truth when nobody else would. Then one day they hurt you, and now they are gone.
Two things happen after that. The first is pain. The second is quieter, and it lasts longer. You start to believe the help was wasted, and you begin to think of yourself as a fool.
That is the real damage. Not what they took. What you now think of your own kindness.
Tej answers this directly. The good you did is not lost. It is stored in a person you cannot see any more.
You will not get to watch it work. That is the hard part. Somewhere, months from now, that person is in trouble and nobody comes. They remember that you did come. In that quiet minute they see, clearly, what they lost.
You are not there for it. Nobody tells you. And it still happens.
Now the two lines at the end of his quote, which are easy to miss.
It is great to accept someone's mistake. It is greater to forgive it.
He puts them in that order for a reason. Accepting is the first step, and it is a real one. You stop arguing. You stop demanding that they admit what they did. You let the matter be closed, even though it was never made right.
Many people stop there, and that is honest. Accepting is not pretending. You can accept what a person did and never trust them again.
Forgiving is the step after. And it is worth being very clear about what it is not.
Forgiving is not saying the harm was small. It was not small. Forgiving is not saying you caused it. You did not. Forgiving is not a door you have to open again. You can forgive a person completely and never let them near your life. Those are two separate choices, and only one of them is about you.
Forgiving is this. You put the bag down. The person is still what they were. The thing they did is still what it was. Only the weight in your hands changes.
Some readers are not ready for that, and this book will not push you. If all you can do today is stop arguing with them in your head, that is enough for today. Forgiving is not a debt you owe the person who hurt you. It is relief, and relief comes when it comes.
While you wait, keep the first line of his quote.
The kindness you gave was real. It happened. It did not become a mistake later because of what they did next. You were the kind of person who helps, on a day when it was not easy, and nothing they did after can remove that.
Somewhere tonight, a person who left you is remembering one small thing you did, and saying nothing about it to anyone.
Let Them Learn Their Own Way
You are getting what you asked for. So why interfere in another person's affairs? Let them do what they feel like doing. They will learn from their mistakes and move on. Do not spend your time watching their lives, and fall behind by not learning from your own.
There is a kind of anger that looks like concern. You watch someone make a bad choice, and it makes you angry for days.
Ask what is under it. Often it is this. They are not being punished, and you were.
Tej offers a plain trade. Their mistakes are their teachers. Your mistakes are yours. Nobody can do that work for another person.
And while you are studying their life, your own lesson sits there, unread.
Try this today. Choose one small thing you would normally warn someone about, and stay quiet.
Forgiven More Than You Know
God loves us and forgives us for all our bad deeds. Why can we not forgive a person who has done something wrong to us? The one who loves people with the same love he gives to God will know what true love is. He will know what we gain when we love everyone who comes into our life.
This is Tej's own faith, and he states it plainly. God forgives everything, so we can forgive too.
You may believe that. You may not. Either way there is something here for you.
Think about your own worst act. The one you would not want read aloud. Now think of the people who know part of it and stayed anyway.
You have been forgiven for things too. Quietly, by somebody, with no speech about it.
The argument is not that you owe forgiveness to anyone. It is that you have already received it.
Try this today. Remember one time somebody forgave you. Say their name.
You Lost One Person
If someone hurt your emotions, learn something from it and move on. There are more than seven billion people in the world, and you are losing only one. Do not stop your search until you find somebody who will always be with you.
Seven billion is a hard number to feel. So make it smaller. In your own city there are people you have not met who would be glad to know you.
This does not make the loss small. Losing one person can hurt for years. Tej is not saying that the person did not matter.
He is saying something else. The door did not close on everyone. It closed on one.
And his last line is the kind one. Do not stop your search.
Try this today. Send a message to one person you have not spoken to in a year.
Say Hello to Your Enemies
Go ahead and say hello to your enemies. By doing this you are freeing yourself from hate and from angry thoughts about them. Even if they do not say a word, do not be upset. Be proud that you are always kind to people, without worrying about what they did to you.
You see them at a wedding, across the room, or in a shop, standing in the same queue. Your body knows before your mind does. Your chest tightens and your face becomes careful.
Then comes the small, ugly work of the next ten minutes. Where do I stand? Do I look? Did they see me? Am I smiling too much, so they think I am fine?
You leave tired, and you did not even speak.
This is what the quote is about, and the advice is strange at first. Say hello.
Not forgive them aloud. Not sit down and discuss what happened. Not become friends. One word, in passing.
Ask what that word actually does.
While you are avoiding a person, they are living in your head and paying nothing. You plan around them. You keep a report of where they are. That is a lot of room to give somebody you do not even like.
Saying hello ends the planning. It costs two seconds. After it, there is nothing left to arrange.
Notice who this is for. He does not say the hello helps them. He says it frees you.
Now a necessary line, because the advice above has a limit.
If a person is dangerous to you, do not go near them. Not to say hello, not to prove anything, not for this book. Forgiving is not returning. You can forgive a person and never be in the same room again. If your safety or your peace needs distance, then distance is the right answer, and nothing is wrong with you for choosing it.
For those people, the hello can be said inside your own head, where they cannot reach you. It works the same way. What you are ending is the war inside you, not the one outside.
He adds a warning, and it is the most useful line in the quote. Even if they do not say a word, do not be upset.
This matters, because most people do this for the wrong reason. They say hello and then wait. They want the other person's face to change, and they want an apology, or shame, or some sign that it reached them.
If that is what you are waiting for, you have put nothing down. You have only found a new way to carry it.
So expect nothing. They may look away. They may pretend not to see you. That is their business, and it is no longer your work.
Then he says: be proud. That word is worth keeping. Not calm. Not patient. Proud.
Because what you did was hard, and it was not weakness. Anyone can stay cold. Speaking first to someone who hurt you, and expecting nothing back, is one of the strongest things a person does in an ordinary week.
Nobody watching would notice it. To the room, it was two people saying hello near a door.
Only you know what you were carrying, and that you walked out without it.
What the Hate Is Costing You
You still think about all those you hate for what they did to you. It means you are still holding the pain, and have not forgiven them. Release that pain to make room for your own peace and happiness. There are millions of things to be happy about. Be grateful for what you have.
Hate is not free. It uses the same hours you would use for anything else.
Count what it takes. The talks you hold with someone who is not there. The sleep. The way a good day turns grey when their name appears.
Tej does not ask you to feel warmly about them. He asks you to see the room they are using, and to want it back.
Millions of things to be happy about, he says. Most of them are small, and near you right now.
Try this today. Write down three good things from today, before you sleep.
You Cannot Plan the Road
Do not be sad about what happened in the past. Try to learn from those events and move on. Do not plan your exact future either. What you planned may be different from what God has planned for you, and you end up disappointed. Ask God to unfold the surprises and the road you will travel in this life. Keep your attention on this present moment. Live as if today is the only day you have.
Two things pull you out of today. The past, which you keep editing. The future, which you keep arranging.
Both feel like useful work. Neither one is.
His picture is a road that unfolds in front of you, and you do not get the whole map. You get the next part, and it is enough to walk on.
That is a hard idea for a careful person. But look at your life so far, and notice how little of the good in it was ever in your plan.
Try this today. Notice one good thing about this hour that you did not plan.
Forgive Your Own Decisions
After making a decision in your life, keep to it, and do not change your mind once it is decided. If the decision does not go your way, do not be upset. Remember, every decision has a good side and a bad side. We make important decisions by thinking what is best for us at that moment. It may help us, or it may not. Thinking again and again about past decisions is a waste.
There is one person left to forgive, and you have been avoiding them.
You. The one who chose the wrong work, trusted the wrong person, or stayed too long.
You judge that decision with facts you did not have at the time. That is not fair, and you would not do it to a friend.
You chose what looked best that day, with the little you knew. That is all any decision ever is.
Put that one down too. It is the heaviest bag in the room.
Try this today. Forgive yourself for one old decision. Say it out loud.
Back to contentsChapter 5 — Kindness Costs Nothing
The smallest good thing you do is never wasted. You may think kindness needs money. It does not.
Most of the kind things people remember cost nothing at all. A message sent at the right hour. A seat given to someone who needed it more. Someone who noticed you were quiet, and asked why.
We often wait to be kind. We wait until we have more money, more time, and a little more peace in our own life. Then we will help. That day keeps moving further away.
Kindness has a simpler rule. Give what you have now. Not what you wish you had. Right now you have attention, words, a little time, and the ability to notice another person. That is already enough.
There is one more idea here, and it is the harder one. Kindness is not a trade. You do not give in order to receive. But something does come back, and it usually arrives from a direction you were not watching.
Seven short pages. Each one asks for something small.
Give What You Have Now
We get so many blessings after blessing others. Life is simple. Give what you have at any moment to someone in need. What you get back is more than you can measure. God loves to give surprise gifts in our life.
There is a small trap in the word give.
When we hear it, we think of money. So we check our pocket, find it thin, and decide that giving is for other people. Richer people. Later people. The person we will be next year.
Look at the quote again. It does not say give what you have saved. It says give what you have at any moment. That is a different instruction, and a much easier one.
At this moment you have things that cost nothing:
- You can listen without checking the time.
- You can say the kind sentence you were only thinking.
- You can share what you know with someone who is new.
- You can be patient with a tired person behind a counter.
- You can forgive a small thing today instead of carrying it for a month.
None of that needs money. All of it needs attention. And attention is the one thing almost nobody around you is receiving.
Now the harder half.
Tej says we receive blessings after we bless others. Read the order carefully. The giving comes first. This is not a trade, and it is important not to turn it into one. If you give in order to get, you will spend the whole time watching the door, waiting for your payment. That is not kindness. That is a deal with a friendly face, and people can feel the difference.
So give, and then stop watching.
What comes back rarely comes back from the person you helped. That is the part that surprises people. You help a neighbour carry a heavy box, and months later a stranger stops for you when your bag splits in the street. You explain something patiently to a new colleague, and a year later someone is patient with you, when you are the new one.
He calls these surprise gifts. You may read that as God. You may read it as the simple way a life fills with the kind of people you have been to others. The pattern holds either way.
One more thing.
Giving does not empty you. We expect to feel lighter in the pocket and heavier in the chest, and the opposite usually happens. You give away twenty minutes and walk away feeling larger than before. This is not magic. It is what happens when you stop being the main character of your own worry, even for twenty minutes.
Life is simple, he says. He does not say it is easy. But it is simple.
Give what you have. Not what you wish you had.
Do Not Wait for a Better Moment
Love them all, and forgive those who left you even after you helped them a lot. Whenever you get a chance to help people, act on it. Feel the happiness spreading inside you and around you.
The chance to help almost never arrives at a good time. It comes when you are tired, or late, or already busy with a problem of your own. That is why so many chances pass.
Notice the second half of what he says. The happiness spreads inside you first, then around you. You are not only the giver here. You are also one of the people being helped.
And notice the forgiving. He is clear that some people will take your help and still leave. Help them anyway. A kindness given to the wrong person is still a kindness. It does not become a mistake later.
Try this today. Say yes to one small request you would normally delay.
The Gift With No Price on It
People worry about what they will get in return. They do not think about what you give with unconditional love. If something good arrives without any effort from you, it is the reward for what you gave freely in the past.
Unconditional is a long word for a simple thing. It means you give without a condition. No "if". No "then". You never say: if I help you, then you will owe me.
Most of us give with a small condition attached, even when we do not say it aloud. We notice who thanked us. We notice who did not.
Tej looks at it from the other side. When something good arrives in your life for no clear reason, do not call it luck. Call it a return on something you gave long ago and forgot.
You will never match the two events. That is fine. You are not meant to keep the accounts.
Try this today. Give one thing without telling anyone you gave it.
What They Need, Not What You Have Spare
Live for others. Give them what they need. Be sure that you are increasing your own good days while you do it.
There is a difference between what someone needs and what we find easy to give.
Money is often easier than time. Advice is much easier than silence. We give the thing we have spare, and then feel puzzled that it made no difference to them.
So ask first. What does this person need right now? Sometimes it is help. Often it is company. Sometimes it is only for someone to agree that the situation is hard.
Then read his second sentence, which is easy to miss. He says this increases your good days. He is not asking you to empty yourself for other people. He is telling you where good days come from.
Try this today. Before you help someone, ask them what would help most.
What People Keep
When you get a chance to do something good for people, act on it. In your absence, they will remember all the good things you did for them. Winning people's hearts is the best achievement in any relationship. Always be good and helpful, and you will be loved more than you expected.
People forget what you said. They remember how you treated them on a bad day.
Think of someone who was kind to you years ago, when they did not have to be. You can probably still picture the moment. Here is the other half: you are inside somebody else's memory in the same way, and you have no idea which moment they kept.
That is the quiet argument for being kind when nobody is watching, and when it makes no difference to your day. You are not building a reputation. You are being placed in somebody's memory, and you do not get to choose which part.
Try this today. Thank someone for a kindness they showed you long ago.
When Kindness Is Refused
When a person does not accept your kindness, do not worry. It is his lack of understanding. He is not aware of what we receive when we keep an open mind and a pure heart.
This page is for the day it goes wrong.
You are kind to someone and they are cold about it. They look at you as if you want something. Most people feel foolish at that moment, and quietly decide to be a little less open in future. That is the real cost of a refused kindness. Not the wasted effort. The door you close afterwards.
Tej's answer is gentle. The problem is not you, and it is not your kindness. Some people have been given so little in their life that a free gift looks like a trap.
You are allowed to feel disappointed. Just do not let one cold answer change how you meet the next person.
Try this today. Be kind once more to someone who did not respond last time.
Everything Is Going to Be All Right
Do good to others. Help them when they need you. Seeing them happy because of your act is the best reward you can get. Do anything to bring smiles to people's faces. You are changing their bad day into a good one. Everyone needs someone to tell him, "Everything is going to be all right."
Somewhere near you today, someone is having a much worse day than you know about.
They will not announce it. They will stand in the queue, answer their messages, do their work, and say they are fine. This is what most suffering looks like from outside. Quiet, ordinary, and completely invisible.
This is why the last line of the quote matters so much. Everyone needs someone to tell them that everything is going to be all right.
Not because it is a guarantee. You cannot promise that. You often do not know whether it is true.
It matters because of what sits underneath the words: I can see that you are struggling, and I am not walking past it. That is the whole message. The sentence is only the wrapping.
Notice how rarely anyone says it to an adult. We say it to children easily. Then people grow, and everyone silently agrees that a grown person should manage alone. So the adults around you carry things quietly. The thing they most lack is not money, and it is not advice. It is the feeling that somebody noticed.
You can give that in four seconds.
Now, the reward.
Tej says that seeing someone happy because of what you did is the best reward you can get. That sounds like a nice thing to say, until you test it. Then you find it is simply accurate.
Money you spend. Praise fades by the evening. But the face of someone whose day you changed stays with you for years. You can return to it whenever you need to believe you are a decent person. No other reward behaves like that.
He also uses a strong phrase: do anything to bring smiles to people's faces. Anything. Look like a fool. Be the first one to speak. Send the message you are not sure is welcome. Ask the second question after they say "I'm fine", because the first answer is almost never the true one.
Most people never do this. Not because they are unkind. Because they are afraid of getting it slightly wrong. They worry the other person will think they are interfering. So they say nothing, and the other person goes home believing that nobody noticed.
It is worth being slightly wrong.
You will sometimes ask, and be told politely that everything is fine. That costs you nothing. And every so often you will ask, and the person will go quiet, and then tell you the truth. On that day you will be the only one who asked.
That is not a small thing to be.
You do not need to fix anyone's life. You could not, and it is not your job. You only have to be the person who noticed, and who said the ordinary sentence out loud.
Everything is going to be all right.
Say it to someone today.
Back to contentsChapter 6 — Your Words Come Back to You
Say good things, or say nothing.Words are the cheapest thing you own. They are also the thing people keep longest.
You can forget what you said in one minute, and the person who heard it can carry it for ten years. That is the strange power of speech. Nothing else is so small to give and so heavy to receive.
Two habits do most of the work here.
The first is saying the good thing out loud. Most of us think kind words and never speak them. We assume the other person already knows. They do not.
The second is staying quiet. Not every thought needs an audience. Some words help nobody, and they return to the person who threw them.
One more thing, for the reader who worries about English. You do not need beautiful sentences. "I am glad you came" is enough. A plain sentence, honestly meant, does more than a clever one. Nobody was ever hurt by simple words spoken with care.
Eight pages. One of them is a list you can use today.
Sentences You Can Use Today
Saying hello. How are you. How have you been. I missed you. I love you. Have a nice day. Good night. You will always be in my thoughts. You will always be remembered. I believe in you. I trust you. Do not lose hope. I will pray to God that you will make it. God bless you with love, happiness and success. I like your personality. You look great today. When you feel lonely, call me. I will be with you even if the whole world is against you. None of these words cost anything.
This page is a list, not an essay.
Many people want to be kind and do not know what to say, so they say nothing and the moment passes. Here are sentences that always work. None of them are clever. That is exactly why they work.
Read the list. Mark three you could say this week. Say them to three different people. The first one will feel strange in your mouth. Say it anyway. It gets easier after that.
- Hello. How are you?
- How have you been?
- I missed you.
- Have a nice day.
- Good night.
- You will always be in my thoughts.
- I believe in you.
- I trust you.
- Do not lose hope.
- I am praying for you.
- I like your personality.
- You look well today.
- When you feel lonely, call me.
- I will be with you.
Write two of your own here:
- __
- __
Say them plainly. Do not decorate them. A short sentence spoken with care is worth more than a long one you practised. And the person hearing it will not judge your grammar. They will only hear that somebody noticed them. That is what the list is for. These words cost you nothing, and they can carry a person through a very hard day.
When There Is Nothing Good to Say
Say good things. When there is nothing good to say, say nothing. If others speak badly, let them. Be a good listener. Do not carry their garbage to your home, helping them to keep their own home clean.
Four people are talking about someone who is not in the room. The talk is not kind. Then there is a small pause, and everyone looks at you.
This is the moment the page is about. You feel a pull to add one line. Not a cruel line. Just one small agreement, so you are not the odd person standing outside the group.
Tej gives a short rule for that pause. Say good things. When there is nothing good to say, say nothing.
Silence feels rude to us. It is not. Silence is a complete answer. The group will forget it in four seconds. You will not, and neither will the person being discussed, on the day it reaches them. It usually does.
Notice that he does not ask you to correct anybody. He says: if others speak badly, let them. You are not the judge of the room. You only decide what leaves your own mouth. That is a smaller job, and you can actually do it.
Now the second half, which is harder.
Be a good listener, he says. Then he adds a warning that most kind people never hear. Do not carry their garbage home.
Look at the picture he is making. A person empties their anger into you. They feel lighter. They sleep well. Their house is clean now. And you walk home with a bag of somebody else's rubbish. You open it again at eleven at night, and you think about it until you are angry at a person who did nothing to you.
That is not listening. That is collecting.
Real listening is simpler than we think. You give the person your full attention for as long as they need it. You do not repeat what you heard to anybody, and when you stand up, you leave it on the table.
How do you leave it? Say one honest sentence and stop. "That sounds hard." Then do not take the story further. Do not repeat it at home. Do not lie awake trying to solve it. It was never yours to solve.
Some people will bring you a bag every week. Notice them. You can still listen, and still be warm, and still decide not to accept the bag. Kindness does not require you to take everything a person hands you.
There is one more reason to be careful here, and it is the same reason your words come back to you. The words you repeat become your words. Nobody remembers who started a story. They remember the mouth it came out of last.
So keep the rule short, because a short rule survives a hard day.
Say good things. When there is nothing good to say, say nothing. Listen well, and leave the bag on the table.
Your Actions Say It Better
There is no enjoyment in telling others how great you are. Enjoyment lies in doing great things that others notice. They will see your greatness through your actions and achievements.
Watch what happens when a person praises himself in a room. Everyone is polite. Nobody argues. Nobody believes it either.
Praise only means something when it comes from outside you. Said about yourself, the same words weigh nothing.
Self-praise carries another cost. When you tell people how great you are, you set a test, and now they are watching to see if it is true. You have made your own life harder.
Do the work instead. Finish it. People notice finished things without being asked to.
Try this today. Do one good piece of work and tell nobody about it.
Tell Yourself, Then Do It
Talking to yourself and getting things done is the better way. Telling hundreds of people who you are and how you will make it happen is not.
Telling many people about a plan feels like progress. It is not.
You get the warm feeling of the finished thing before you have done any of it. Then the hunger to do it is gone.
Tej offers the quieter method. Say the plan to yourself. Then do the work. Then let people learn about it when it is real.
This also protects you. A plan announced to a hundred people has a hundred opinions attached to it by the weekend. A plan kept quiet has only yours.
Try this today. Keep one plan private until the first part of it is finished.
You Do Not Have to Convince Anyone
When people get a chance to praise themselves, they take it. But true praise comes from talking to yourself and enjoying your success. There is no need to speak and convince people. Follow the example of great people who do not praise themselves. They let their work speak.
There is a moment in most conversations when a door opens. You could walk through it and describe how well you are doing.
Almost nobody refuses that door.
But notice what you are really doing there. You are asking the other people to agree that you are good. You have handed them the decision, and if they do not agree, your success shrinks in your own eyes.
You do not need their vote. You can sit alone with what you did and be glad about it. That is true praise, and nobody can remove it.
Try this today. When you want to explain how well you are doing, stop after one sentence.
Impressive or Expressive
A person with knowledge has an impressive frame of mind. A person with wisdom has an expressive frame of mind.
Two people know the same thing. They do not use it the same way.
The first one answers you and leaves you feeling small. Every word is correct. You understood none of it, and you will not ask again.
The second one answers you and leaves you able to explain it to somebody else.
Knowledge wants to be admired. Wisdom wants to be shared. That difference is small to describe and easy to feel, and the listener always knows which one arrived.
The test is simple. After you speak, ask who was served: you, or the person listening.
Try this today. Explain one thing you know using the simplest words you have.
Wait Before You Speak
Do not get too excited to speak. Be silent and watch everyone. Think about the effect your words will have on the people listening. If anyone is hurt by your words, it will come back to you like a boomerang. Share only good things, and respect other people's feelings. Find happiness inside you. You will always be respected.
Think of the last time you were in a group and you had something good to say.
Do you remember waiting? Most of us do not listen in that moment. We hold the sentence in our mouth like a coin, and we watch for the gap where we can spend it. The other person is still talking. We are no longer there.
Tej starts with that exact feeling. Do not get too excited to speak.
Excitement is not the problem. The hurry is. When you are in a hurry to speak, you stop measuring, and the sentence leaves before you have checked it. Most words that hurt people were never meant to hurt anybody. They were simply not weighed.
So he gives you two steps before the words. Be silent. Watch everyone.
Most of us skip the watching. In any group, someone is having a bad week. Someone is quietly ashamed of the thing you are about to joke about. You cannot know this while you are only waiting for your turn. Ten seconds of watching will teach you more than ten minutes of talking.
Then the third step, and this is the useful one. Think about the effect your words will have on the people listening.
Not whether the sentence is true. Not whether it is funny. What will it do when it arrives?
Then he uses his own picture, and it is worth keeping. A boomerang is a curved wooden stick. You throw it away from you, it turns in the air, and it comes back to your hand. If anyone is hurt by your words, he says, it comes back to you like a boomerang.
You do not have to believe in anything for this to be true. It is simply how people work. The words reach the person. The person keeps them. Months later they greet you carefully. Or they repeat your words to somebody else. It arrives back at you with your name attached to it. You threw it. It returns.
The good news sits in the same picture. Kind words travel the same road home. You praised somebody in a room they were not in. Somebody told them. Now they trust you, and you never asked them to.
Then he says something that looks unrelated, and is not. Find happiness inside you.
This is the root of the whole page. People speak carelessly when they need something from the room. They need to be liked, or to look clever, or to win the small argument. That need is what makes the mouth fast. A person who is settled inside does not need the room to give him anything. So he can afford to be quiet, and to choose, and to speak only when it helps.
That is why the last line is not a reward for good behaviour. Respect simply arrives at a person who is not chasing it.
Hold the sentence for two seconds before you throw it. Ask where it will land, and remember that it is coming back to your hand.
Think With Your Mind, Speak From Your Heart
When you deal with all kinds of people, think from your mind and speak from your heart. Your mind is sure of what to say and what not to say. Your heart will only choose words that do not hurt anybody. While you do this, do not let others take charge of you. Do what is best for you.
Two parts. You need both.
The mind decides what to say and what not to say. It is the filter. It knows that a true sentence can still be the wrong sentence today.
The heart chooses the actual words. It picks the ones that do not wound.
A mind without a heart is correct and cold. A heart without a mind says everything and repairs it later.
Then Tej adds a line that stops this becoming weakness. Do not let others take charge of you. Gentle words are not the same as agreement, and you can be soft in your words while staying firm about what you do.
Try this today. Before a hard conversation, decide one sentence you will not say.
Back to contentsChapter 7 — Dream Big, Then Do the Work
Wishing is the easy half.Wanting a different life is common. Building one is not.
That gap between the wanting and the building is where the shape of a life is decided.
Dreaming is free. You can do it lying in bed. You can do it while the day goes badly. And it helps: a clear picture tells you which way to walk. But a picture is not a road.
Both halves belong together. Think big, and then do the small, dull, daily work that big things are actually made of.
Tej is direct about this. He asks you to want more than the life around you seems to offer. He also asks you to practise, to wait, and to keep working when nobody claps.
That second half is where most dreams are lost. Not to bad luck. To the long quiet middle, where nothing has happened yet.
You may have fewer chances than the person next to you. That is real, and pretending otherwise would help nobody. The claim here is narrower. The hours you put in are still yours.
Seventeen pages. Four questions in the middle, for you to answer.
The Diamond Will Shine
One day my mom said to me, "The diamond will surely shine one day, even if someone tries to hide its brightness." That is, keep doing the good work without expecting anything from anyone.
Think of a day when you did good work and nobody noticed.
You stayed late. You fixed something nobody knew was broken. You helped a person who never said your name afterwards. Then you went home, tired, and asked yourself a quiet question. What is the point?
This is the only page in this book where Tej writes about his family. One sentence from his mother, and he kept it. That alone tells you how much a single sentence can carry.
Look at what she said. A diamond does not stop being a diamond when someone covers it. Put a cloth over the stone and the stone is unchanged. What changed is only what people can see.
The thought is simple, and on a bad day it is very hard to believe.
Most of us measure our work by the response it gets. Praise means the work was good. Silence means it was not. We do this without deciding to. It feels like plain sense.
Ask any person who does quiet, necessary work. The cleaner. The nurse on a night shift. The mother who kept a house running for twenty years. The value of what they did was never once equal to the amount of praise they received for it.
The work and the response are two different things. They often arrive years apart. Sometimes they never meet.
Notice she did not say "if someone tries to hide it". She said "even if". She was honest with him. People will try. A person will take your idea and say it louder. Someone older will speak over you. Work will be passed upward and arrive with a different name on it.
She did not promise this would never happen. She promised it would not decide the ending.
Now the second half of the quote, which is the harder half. Keep doing the good work without expecting anything from anyone.
Expecting is the trap. The moment you expect, your work becomes a bill you hand to the world. The world does not read bills. So you wait, the payment does not arrive on your date, and slowly you do less good work. You did not become a worse person. You simply grew tired of waiting.
There is a freedom in dropping the expectation. The work is then yours. Nobody can spoil it by failing to notice.
Understand what this page is not saying. It is not asking you to stay silent forever. Ask for the pay you earned. Say your own name in the room. Being a diamond is not the same as being quiet.
It only says this. Do not let their blindness decide what you produce.
You may be at the earliest part of this. No result yet, nobody watching, no proof that any of it is working. That stage is long, and it is meant to be long.
Somewhere under a cloth, in a dark room, the stone is exactly what it is.
Hard Days Are Practice
Stay outside your comfort zone. Handle difficult people. Work on things that need real effort, even when they are stressful and hard. This prepares you. When the same situation comes again, you will face it with confidence and no panic. Learn to find peace, joy, courage, passion, knowledge and experience in the events of your life.
Your comfort zone is the set of things you already know how to do. Inside it nothing goes wrong, and nothing improves.
Every hard day teaches something. A difficult person teaches patience. A task that is too big for you teaches you how to cut a large thing into parts you can finish. You do not enjoy it while it happens. You collect it anyway.
Then the same situation returns, and you are calm. It has not become easier. You have simply met it before, and a thing you have already met is smaller than it was.
Try this today. Do one small thing you have been avoiding because it feels hard.
Talking Is Easy
You can do anything when you think constantly about what you want. Give it everything, and do not listen to people who say you cannot. Talking is easy. Doing is rare.
Everyone has a plan they describe well. Very few are working on one today.
Talking about a dream feels like progress. It is not. It gives you the same good feeling that finishing would give, and it costs nothing, so we do it again and again.
Tej's answer is constant thought and constant effort, aimed at one thing. Not louder words. And do not hand your decision to people who never tried.
The proof of a plan is what you did about it this week.
Try this today. Tell nobody your plan. Do one hour of it instead.
Building a Name, Keeping a Name
Two things are most difficult in life. One is to earn a name for yourself. The other is to keep the name you earned.
A name is what people expect from you before you speak.
Building one is slow. You do good work, you keep your word, and after some years people trust you without checking.
Keeping it is the part nobody prepares for. The same behaviour that built the name has to continue after you stop needing to prove anything. That is harder, because nobody claps for the second ten years.
Most names are lost quietly, not in one scandal but in small promises broken on tired days.
Try this today. Keep one small promise you had nearly forgotten.
Choose the Big Game
Always try to play the big game, the one that takes your breath away. People look for easy, small games that end early.
A game that takes your breath away is one big enough to frighten you a little.
Most people choose smaller. A small goal is safe. You finish it, feel fine for a day, and then start looking for the next small thing to finish. Years pass this way and nothing changes shape.
A big aim behaves differently. It is too large to finish quickly, so it organises your ordinary days. It gives your mornings a reason.
You may fail at it. But a person who aimed high and reached halfway has travelled further than a person who reached the end of something small.
Try this today. Write down one aim that is too big for this year.
Feed Your Own Growth
Every person has to give himself what he needs to grow. Believe in your dreams. Have faith and hope in what you want in your life. Have patience, and keep loving yourself and your life every moment. When you see your wishes coming true, you will understand how this works. Try it. It is simple. Be sure you carry no doubt in your mind, because doubt slows the whole thing.
Nobody is going to arrive and grow you.
Tej's list is plain. Belief, faith, hope, patience, and love for your own life. These are not decorations. They are what keeps a person working through the long part, when there is no result yet.
Doubt is the item he warns about. Doubt does not only feel bad. It makes you stop early, and then it hands you a reason to call the stopping wisdom.
So hold the picture of what you want, and keep working while you wait. Wanting and waiting are not enough alone. Wanting, working and waiting are.
Try this today. Name one thing you need in order to grow, then give it to yourself.
A Tower of Cards
Once you become an inspiration and a role model, people expect steady work, wisdom and knowledge from you. Now you carry great responsibility. Your good name is just like a pack of cards. If you stop caring, it does not take much to destroy the respect you built over years.
Build a tower of cards and it stands. Pull one card and the whole thing falls in a second.
Respect works the same way. It is built slowly, card by card, over years. It can end in one afternoon.
This page is about the cost of being trusted. Once people call you an example, ordinary behaviour is no longer enough. They watch how you speak when you are angry, and whether you do the boring thing you promised.
That is a weight. It is also the price of being listened to.
Try this today. Do the thing you said you would do, exactly as you said it.
Write the Short List
Think big and see the result. Want to try it? Make a short wish list. Picture it clearly. Then have patience for a week. You will be surprised how life starts to open the way to what you want. Try it and feel the power.
There is nothing magic in a wish list. What it does is simpler, and stronger.
When you write down what you want, you begin to notice it. The chance was often already in the room. Your attention was somewhere else.
So write a short list. Five things, not fifty. Read it in the morning. Then wait a week and watch what you notice that you would have walked past before.
Patience is the step that gets skipped. A week is not long, and yet day two is where most of these lists quietly die.
Try this today. Write five things you want on one piece of paper.
Talent and Skill Are Not the Same
Talent is something we have in our blood. Skill is something we gain after hours and hours of constant practice. Remember, a person with skill is always successful, because he has already walked the road, believing in himself and his effort. Try and try again until you succeed. Do not quit. The destination is only a mile away.
Two people start on the same day.
The first one is quick. Things come easily to him, and people say so. The second one is ordinary. He is slower, and he knows it.
Five years later the second one is better. This happens so often that it is almost a rule.
Tej separates two words we usually mix. Talent and skill.
Talent is what you were born with. It is in your blood, he says. You did not earn it, and you cannot order more of it. Some people sing in tune the first time. Some people look at numbers and understand them at once.
Skill is different. Skill is bought with hours. Hours and hours, he says, of constant practice. That is the only price, and everybody pays in the same currency.
This matters for you more than it looks.
Talent is not fair. It is given at birth, and nobody asks whether you needed it. If success depended on talent alone, most of us should close this book now.
Hours are fairer. Not perfectly fair, because some people have more free time and fewer mouths to feed. But hours can be found. Twenty minutes before work. An hour after the children sleep. The same twenty minutes, on a Tuesday nobody remembers, three hundred times.
That is how skill is actually built. It is boring, and from outside it looks like nothing at all.
Nobody praises you during those hours. There is no audience in a small room at six in the morning. This is exactly why so few people stay. The work is not hard on any single day. It is only hard to repeat.
Now read the middle of the quote again. A person with skill is always successful, because he has already walked the road.
Already walked. Not "will walk". The skilled person is not calm because he is brave. He is calm because he has done the thing several hundred times, including the times it went badly. Fear grows in uncertainty. He has very little uncertainty left.
That is what the hours buy you. Not only ability. Calm.
Then his last line. Do not quit. The destination is only a mile away.
He does not say it is close because he can see it. He says it because nobody can see it. That is the honest problem with the middle of any long effort. It looks the same as failing. Same room, same small progress, no result yet.
You are not owed a signal. The mile is still a mile, whether or not you believe in it.
So choose one thing you want to be good at. Not five. One.
Then find your twenty minutes, and guard them like money.
Somewhere tonight a person with less talent than you is sitting in a small room, doing the same dull thing for the four hundredth time. In two years everyone will call him gifted.
Close Your Eyes and Look
Close your eyes and picture how you want your life to be. How you want yourself to be. How you want the people around you to be. What do you want to experience? A good job, a loving relationship, enough money, a wonderful family, a great house to live in? Hold on to these thoughts, and start living towards the life you want. Believe in yourself. Have strong faith that this will happen in time.
You cannot walk to a place you cannot describe.
You almost certainly know what you do not want, and that list comes quickly when anyone asks. Ask yourself what you do want, and the answer goes vague. Better. More. Happier.
So close your eyes and be exact. What time do you wake in this life? Who is in the room? What work do you do that day? What does the money pay for?
A clear picture is not the work. It is the map. You still have to walk.
Try this today. Close your eyes for two minutes and picture one ordinary day in the life you want.
Do Not Look Back
Focus on what you want to grow. It could be anything you want in your life. Once you know what you want, hold that thought and think about it on purpose. Do not look back until you have it. It will teach you a great deal while you build the life you dream of.
Whatever you give attention to grows. That is true of a plant, a skill, and a worry.
Most of us split our attention over many wants, so nothing gets enough to grow. Then we decide we are unlucky.
His instruction is harder than it sounds. Choose one thing, and do not look back until you have it. Looking back means checking the choices you refused, and asking again whether you chose right.
That question feels responsible. Usually it is only fear, wearing better clothes.
Try this today. Choose one goal, and stop reviewing the ones you did not choose.
Write Your Own Book
Know yourself. Hold your own beliefs. Think big, and use your mind in the most creative way you can. Start painting the dreams of your own life. Do not blindly follow all that is written in books. Make your own book, and stay with it. Still take the gift of great words from great people around the world, who have shared what life taught them. Life has plenty to give. Live it beyond your imagination, and always do what your heart says.
Read the good books. Take what great people learned and paid for. Then stop copying.
Nobody else has your life, your family, your country, or your particular chances. A rule that worked perfectly for a person in another place may not fit your day at all.
So make your own book. Write what you actually believe, in your own words, and stay with it. Change it when life proves you wrong. Not when someone speaks with confidence.
Advice is useful. Obedience is not the same as learning.
Try this today. Write down three rules you live by, in your own words.
Four Questions for Today
What will you do today for your dreams? Will you wait for your dream to come true without doing anything, or will you do something now? Will you do something good for your family, your loved ones and the world, and make at least one person happy today? Do you claim to be right all the time, or do you try to learn from what people say about you?
These four questions are the whole chapter in one place. Answer them in writing, now, before you read on. Use a pen and paper, not your head.
1. What will I do today for my dream? One action, small enough to finish before tonight.
2. Am I waiting, or am I working? Which one honestly describes this week?
3. Who will I make happy today, and how?
4. What do people say about me that I usually refuse to hear? Is any part of it true?
Why writing helps: a dream you never write stays a feeling, and feelings change with the weather. A written answer stays on the page. It asks you the same question again tomorrow, in your own handwriting, and it is harder to argue with.
If one question makes you uncomfortable, that is the one to answer slowly.
Keep this list somewhere you will see it. Answer it again next week. The difference between this week's second answer and next week's second answer is your real progress.
Show Them It Can Be Done
Always remember this. You are meant to live a magnificent life, not the kind of life the average person is living. Show others how life can be lived, with love, peace, happiness and plenty, by doing good and being willing to do good. Your karmas are being counted without your notice.
Somebody near you believes a better life is not available to people like them.
They will not believe an argument. They will only believe an example.
This is the outward side of a big life. You are not living it only for yourself. You are quiet proof, to a younger cousin, a neighbour, a colleague, that the ordinary road is not the only road.
Tej adds a warning. Your karmas are counted without your notice. How you climb is being recorded, not only how high you get.
Try this today. Do one good thing that nobody will know about.
Do Not Let Them Take It
I am meant to live a magnificent life. You are meant to live a magnificent life too. So why should we be hurt by people who will not let us enjoy it? Life becomes the way we make it.
Some people will not be pleased for you.
They make small remarks. They explain why your plan will fail. They remember your worst year. And you spend your evenings replaying what they said, instead of doing your work.
That is the real loss. Not their opinion. Your hours.
Tej's question is direct. You are meant to live a magnificent life, so why give your evenings to people who add nothing to it?
Life becomes the way we make it. Not the way they describe it.
Try this today. Notice one person whose words you keep replaying, and stop replaying them.
Wanting More Is Not Wrong
I do not want to live the kind of life most of us are living at the moment. My life is beautiful. I want to live it with happiness, plenty and good health, and to be grateful for all the things God has offered me. If you think this is only a dream, then look again at how life works, and rethink what matters most to you.
Somewhere you were taught that wanting more is greedy.
Look at what Tej actually wants. Happiness, plenty, good health, and gratitude for what he already has. Wanting and being grateful sit in the same sentence. They are not opposites.
People will call it a dream. They said the same to everyone who later changed their situation. It costs them nothing to be wrong about you.
You are allowed to say it aloud. I do not want the life most people around me have accepted.
Try this today. Say clearly, to yourself, one thing you want and have never admitted.
You Compete With Yourself
Do what you need to do. Think what is good for you. Be a better person than before. You are only competing with yourself. Never quit. Keep working until you succeed. If somebody hurt you, pray to God for what is best for him or her. If you did nothing bad to anyone, you have no reason to worry. Be proud of yourself and what you have done. Go to bed with your dreams, and wake up with purpose. Live this way, and you are living life as it should be lived.
There is only one comparison that helps. You today, against you last year.
Everyone else is running a different race, from a different starting place, carrying a different weight. Comparing yourself to them tells you nothing you can use.
Tej's routine is small and daily. Do what you need to do. Be a little better than before. Do not quit. Sleep with your dreams and wake with a purpose.
And if someone hurt you, he says pray for what is best for them. Carrying it costs you far more than it costs them.
Try this today. Write one way you are better than you were a year ago.
Back to contentsChapter 8 — A Smile Cools the Room
Happiness is a habit you practise, not a prize you win. Most of us treat happiness as a prize. We decide it will arrive later. After the money comes. After the illness passes. After one person changes. So we wait, and the day goes past unlived.
Happiness is closer to a habit. It is small, something you practise, and you choose it many times a day in very ordinary moments.
Not every day allows it. Some days are heavy, and no smile will lift them. That is not your fault, and nothing here is a rule you have broken. A hard day is a hard day.
So read these pages as an offer, not an order. Take one small thing from them. Ask yourself how you feel. Smile at one person. Sit quietly for five minutes at night and look back at your day.
One more idea runs through the chapter. Almost all of your life happens now. Not in the memory. Not in the plan. Here.
Eleven pages. Each one is small.
Ask Yourself Before the Day Starts
Before beginning your day, ask yourself how you are going to spend this wonderful day. Would you think about a bad experience in the past, or worry about the future, or live only for this day? Would you hate yourself because some people do not like you? Would you feel lonely without friends? Would you work only for money? Would you blame your parents or your life for everything? Would you think about your problems and your illness every day? Would you get angry with everyone because of an old burden?
This one is an exercise, not a page to read.
Take a sheet of paper tomorrow morning. Write the date at the top. Then write short answers to these questions. One or two lines each is enough.
How do I want to spend today?
Am I carrying a bad memory into it?
Am I worried about a day that has not come?
Am I judging myself by who likes me?
Am I working only for money today?
Am I blaming someone for how my life is?
Am I angry with people who did nothing to me?
Leave space under each one. Some mornings you will write a single word. Some mornings you will fill the page.
Why write it, when you could just think it? Because thoughts move too fast to catch. On paper the day stops for a moment and shows you its shape. You can see the mood you were about to carry into work, into your home, into the first conversation.
And you can see it early, while there is still time to choose a different one.
Keep the sheets. After a month of them you will notice which question you answer the same way every single time. That question is the real one.
Let the Love Out
When I smile, laugh and let love pour from my heart, I feel so good inside. I enjoy doing this every day. This is how you will feel the true essence of life.
Read the order in that sentence. He smiles first. The good feeling comes after.
Most of us wait for the opposite. We wait to feel good first, and then, when the feeling finally arrives, we plan to smile. So we sit and wait for a feeling that was waiting for us.
None of this needs forcing. Just notice that the small act often comes first. You laugh with someone, and only then does the day feel lighter.
He also says he does this every day. That is the part to keep. It is not a big event. It is a habit, like washing.
Try this today. Laugh once with someone, out loud, before you feel ready.
Life Is a Celebration
Every second of your life is like a celebration. Live in the present.
Two short lines, and the second one explains the first.
A celebration is not a big day with lights and food. It is any moment you are fully inside. Most of our seconds are spent somewhere else, in a room we have left or a room we have not reached yet. We eat while thinking about work. We work while thinking about home.
The present is the only place life is actually served. Everything else is a memory or a plan.
You cannot live every second this way. Nobody does. But you can bring yourself back a few times a day, and each time you do, you get that piece of your life back.
Try this today. Eat one meal without your phone in your hand.
Life Smiles Back
I love to laugh and smile every moment of my life. When I do this, life loves to laugh and smile back at me.
Watch what happens in a shop when you smile at the person behind the counter. Their face changes. Then their voice changes.
You did not manage that. You started it.
This is the simplest law in the book. What you show people is mostly what they show you. A hard face meets hard faces all day long, and then it decides that the world is a hard place.
You will meet people who give you nothing back. That happens. It is not a reason to stop, because you are not doing it for them alone. You are also choosing what your own day feels like.
Try this today. Smile at the first stranger who serves you.
Make Room in Your Mind
Be aware of the present moment. It plays a very important role in our life. Be happy. Clear your mind by removing waste and negative thoughts. Give space to positive and useful thoughts. They help you stay calm, cool, focused and relaxed at this moment.
He talks about the mind the way you would talk about a small room.
A room with too much in it is hard to work in. You cannot find anything. You knock into things. A mind is the same. Old arguments, old worries and half plans fill the space, and then a useful thought has nowhere to sit.
So the work is not adding. It is removing. Put down one worry you have carried since morning. You are not solving it. You are setting it on the floor for an hour.
Notice how much room appears.
Try this today. Name one worry, then leave it alone for one hour.
The Happiness You Carry
True happiness is felt only when you are aware of the present moment. Keep a smile on your face and love in your heart. Happiness is something we carry in our hearts. It comes from being grateful for many things, and from expecting nothing from anyone. It gives you calmness and peace of mind. Happiness lasts longer than praise. Once you know how to be happy, and you accept yourself the way you are, you will be happier for good.
Think of the last time you felt truly happy. Where were you standing?
Most people can answer that. They were doing something small. Drinking tea in the morning. Walking home in cool air. Sitting with someone who wanted nothing from them.
Almost nobody names the day the money arrived.
That small test proves the quote. Happiness is not stored in big events. It sits in ordinary minutes, and you only get it if you are there when it happens.
Tej uses a good word for it. He says happiness is something we carry. A thing you carry stays with you when you move. It is in your hand, not in the shop.
Praise works the other way. Praise is food someone hands you. It is warm and welcome, and by evening you are hungry again. Then you need the person to hand you more. This is why some people who are praised all day long are still not happy at the end of it. They never learned to cook.
He gives two things that fill the pocket.
The first is being grateful for many things. Not one big thing. Many small ones, counted often. Most of us do the opposite. We count what is missing instead, which is also a habit, and a much easier one to keep.
The second is harder. Expect nothing from anyone. That does not mean you stop loving people or asking for help. It means you stop keeping accounts. Expectation is a slow leak. You give something, then you watch to see what returns, and the watching itself removes the peace you were hoping to feel.
Then the last line, which is the real work of a lifetime. Accept yourself the way you are.
Many people are waiting to become a better version of themselves before they are allowed to feel good. Thinner. Richer. Calmer. More useful to the family. That better person keeps moving one year ahead, and the waiting person never arrives.
One warning, because this idea can be turned into a weapon against yourself.
If today is heavy, you have not failed the test. Being aware of the present moment does not mean forcing a smile over real pain. On a hard day, awareness is simply this: you notice the day is hard, and you stop fighting yourself about it. That is enough. The rest can wait.
But on the ordinary days, the ones that are neither good nor bad, this is where most of your life is kept. Those days pass without being noticed at all.
Happiness you carry weighs nothing. You can take it into a small room, a crowded bus, a long shift at work. Nobody has to hand it to you at the door.
Who You Sit With
How are you feeling at this moment? If you are alone, try to hold the happiest feelings you can. Stay near people who keep those feelings steady. Give less time to people who do not let you be yourself. We are all different in our own way. We do not have to change who we are for other people.
Some people leave you feeling taller. Others leave you tired, and you cannot say why.
You already know which is which. You have known for years. The hard part is acting on it, because many of those people are family, or work with you, and cannot be removed.
You do not have to remove them. You can give them less time and more distance. That is often all you need.
And watch the second half. You do not have to change who you are so that someone finds you easier.
Try this today. Spend ten minutes with the person who leaves you feeling taller.
Look Back Before Sleep
A day is never wasted. Before you sleep, spend some time alone and remember what happened during the day. You will learn from your mistakes and find the good in them. We all have to keep learning from our lives. If we ignore the lesson, we face the same thing again and again. If something good happened, thank God and enjoy your dreams.
Some days feel like nothing happened. Work, food, sleep, and no sign that you moved forward.
He says no day is wasted. But a day only teaches you if you look at it, and five quiet minutes before sleep are enough for that.
Do it gently. This is not a court. You are not there to list your failures. Ask two simple things. What did I learn today? What was good today?
The second question is the one people skip, and it is the one that changes how you sleep.
Try this today. Before sleep, name one thing that was good.
On a Day With No Peace
When there is no peace in your mind, it shows that something has affected you during the day. When there is love, happiness and peace inside you, no outside force can easily disturb your mind and heart. Learn to meet that same event again without reacting too strongly and without losing your peace. The day starts with a sunrise and ends with a sunset. Let your day start with a smile and with thanks for what you have, and end with the quiet feeling of work done well.
Some evenings you feel wrong and do not know why.
Usually something touched you during the day and you did not stop to look at it. A short reply. A message not answered. Something small enough to ignore and heavy enough to carry.
This is not a fault in you. It only means something got in. Naming it is most of the cure. Say it plainly: this is what upset me today.
Then the useful part. The same thing will happen again. Next time you will see it coming, and it will move you a little less.
Try this today. Name the one thing that took your peace today.
Keep Smiling When the Room Is Hot
Keep on smiling. It acts as an air conditioner when the atmosphere around you is hot.
You have stood in a hot room full of people. Everyone is short with each other. A small question gets a sharp answer. Nobody is cruel. The room is just hot, and the heat is doing the talking.
Now think of the machine on the wall that cools the air.
Watch what it does, because Tej chose this picture carefully. The machine does not argue with the heat. It does not explain that the room should be cooler. It simply runs, and after some minutes the whole room is easier to be in. Nobody thanks it. Hardly anyone even looks at it.
A smile works the same way in a hot moment.
It does not answer the anger. It lowers it. Someone comes to you sharp and ready, and your calm face takes the edge off the next sentence. The room drops a few degrees, and the argument that was about to start does not start.
This is not weakness, and it is not pretending. You can be firm and still keep your face open. In fact, the calm face is what gets you heard. Two hot voices are just noise. One calm voice in a hot room is the only thing anyone can follow.
Now the honest part.
Smiling first is hardest exactly when it is needed most. When you are the one being blamed, your face wants to harden. That is normal. Nobody smiles easily while being accused.
So do not treat this as a duty. Treat it as a tool you can pick up on the days you have the strength for it. Some days you will not, and that is fine. You are allowed to be the person who needs the room cooled, instead of the one cooling it.
There is also a second effect, and it works on you.
Your face and your feelings talk to each other in both directions. A hard face keeps you angry for longer. Soften the face, and the feeling loses a little of its fuel. This is not a trick. Anyone can test it in a single afternoon.
One more thing about the machine. It cools the room it stands in, not the street outside.
You cannot fix everyone's mood. You cannot repair a bad office or an angry house on your own. That is too much weight for one person to carry, and trying will only exhaust you in the end.
But the room you are standing in right now is small enough. There are five people in it, or three, or one. Your face is the only thing there that you fully control.
On some days that is the only work you can do. You walk in, you keep your face open, and everyone leaves a little less tired than they came.
You cannot cool the street. You can cool this room.
How Do I Feel Right Now?
Ask yourself one question wherever you go. How am I feeling right now? If you feel good, enjoy the moment. If not, do something to feel good again. It is very important to feel good wherever you go.
This is the smallest habit in the book, and it may be the most useful.
Ask the question a few times a day. How am I feeling right now? Four seconds, no more.
Most people never ask. They carry a mood for six hours without once naming it, and then wonder why the evening went wrong.
If the answer is good, stop and enjoy it. Good moments pass unnoticed more often than bad ones.
If the answer is not good, do one small thing. Drink water. Step outside. Send one message to one person.
Try this today. Ask the question three times: morning, midday, night.
Back to contentsChapter 9 — You Are Not Alone
Someone bigger is looking after you. There are days when you feel completely alone with a problem.
Not lonely. Alone in a different way. There are people around you, and still the whole weight seems to rest on you. If you stop holding it, it falls.
That feeling is heavy, and most adults carry it in silence for years without ever saying it to anyone.
This is the most religious part of the book. Tej writes about God directly and warmly. He is not arguing with anyone. He simply believes he is being looked after, and he says so.
You may believe the same. You may believe something else, or nothing. These pages still work. Under the faith there is a feeling every reader can use. You are not carrying this alone. Help often arrives from a direction you were not watching. The timing of your life is not fully in your hands, and that is a relief, not a loss.
Eight pages. Two are long. One compares God to Facebook, and it is the warmest page in the book.
Read them as a set.
Your Wish May Come Through Someone Else
When you make a wish, you might find that God has directed somebody to make the same wish for you. Be grateful when your wish is fulfilled by somebody acting under His guidance. You will always be guided by someone to help you get what you wish for. Just have faith, belief and patience for your wish to come true.
Think of a time when help arrived from a person you never asked.
Tej reads that as God directing someone toward you. Whatever you call it, the practice is the same. When a wish comes true, look for the human hands it travelled through, and thank them.
Most of us thank the result and forget the person. We say we were lucky. In truth, somebody made a call for us, or said our name in a room we were not in.
The other half of the quote is patience. A wish rarely arrives on the date you set for it.
Try this today. Thank one person who helped you get something you wanted.
A Minute of Faith
A minute of faith in God can turn stone into diamond, and a bad day into a good one. If you have some patience, you will find answers to what happens to you. It is all about living life the way it should be lived. You face some events again and again only because of your choices and your pattern of living. Believe in God. He is the source of inner peace and calmness.
It is early in the morning, and the day has already turned bad.
Something small went wrong before you left the house, and now everything that happens after it lands on top of that. By ten o'clock you have decided what kind of day this is. You are simply waiting for it to finish.
Tej says one minute can change that. One minute of faith. He says it can turn stone into diamond, and a bad day into a good one.
Stay with his picture for a moment, because it is better than it first looks. A diamond is not made of rare material. It is carbon, the same ordinary stuff as coal. Nothing is added to it. What changes it is pressure, held for a very long time. The stone does not turn into something foreign. It becomes what it was always able to be.
He is saying the same about your day, and about you.
So what happens inside that minute?
For him, it is faith in God. He puts the weight down and remembers that he is not the only one holding it. The minute contains nothing else. No words are needed. It is the moment you stop arguing with the hour you are in.
If you do not pray, the minute is still yours. It is the point where you accept that you cannot control this morning, and you stop fighting it. Notice what that does. The bad thing has not changed. Your grip on it has.
Most bad days are not made of events. They are made of the fight against events.
Then he asks for patience, and patience is the one thing nobody wants to give. You will find answers to what happens to you, he says. He is honest here. He does not promise the answer today. Some answers only become visible from further away. You will understand this year in about three years. That is annoying, and it is also true.
There is a harder line in the quote, and it should not be skipped. He says you face some events again and again because of your choices and your pattern of living.
Read that without shame. He is not telling you that your pain is your fault.
He is naming something you have probably noticed already. The same problem keeps arriving with a different face. A different job, the same argument. A different person, the same ending. When a thing repeats, it is worth looking for your part in it. Your part is not the biggest part. It is the only part you can change.
That is not blame. That is the door.
The quote ends where he always ends. God is the source of inner peace and calmness. He states it plainly and does not defend it. You can take it exactly as he means it. You can also take the quieter version underneath. Peace does not come from fixing the day. It comes from stopping the fight.
A minute is nothing. You have already spent longer than that on this page.
The stone is already carrying the diamond.
What You Do Comes Back to You
When you do good things, good will appear around you. If you do bad things, bad will appear around you. If you are always positive, positive things will happen. We all have to look after our own actions and karmas. Keep your life simple by reducing desires you do not need.
This is the oldest idea in the book, and the plainest. What you do returns to you.
Not as an exact payment. Not on a date you can predict. But the way you treat people, over years and without any announcement, slowly builds the world you live in. Be sharp with everyone, and you will soon live among sharp people. Be steady, and steady people stay near you.
Tej calls this looking after your own actions. It is a good phrase. Your actions are yours. They are the one part of the result you fully control.
Then he adds something quieter. Want less, and less can go wrong.
Try this today. Do one good thing that nobody will connect to you.
You Do Not Have to Earn the Help
Do not think when there is no need to think. Do not talk when there is no need to talk. Do what you have to do, because that is all you are supposed to do. God is everywhere, ready to guide you even if you do not pray every day. Have faith in God that He will make you do what He wants. He will warn you through your conscience whenever you are doing something wrong.
Many people feel they have no right to ask for help, and they have a list of reasons ready. They did not pray this week. They were not good enough this year. So they carry the problem alone and call it fair.
Tej removes that idea completely. The help is ready even if you do not pray every day. There is no attendance record.
He also names the way guidance arrives. Your conscience. That small discomfort just before you do the wrong thing. It is quiet, and it is easy to ignore.
The first two lines are pure rest. Do not think when there is no need to think.
Try this today. When that small discomfort arrives, stop and listen to it for ten seconds.
The Right Path at the Wrong Time
The path you have chosen may be right, but it may not be the right time for you. There may be something else which God wants you to focus on before you travel your chosen path. Everything has its own time. Follow your conscience and do not forget your priorities.
This page is for people who are doing everything right and are still waiting.
Tej offers a different reading. The path may be correct. The time may not be yours yet. There may be something you need to finish, or learn, or become, before the door opens.
That is not a comfortable idea, but it is kinder than the other one. The other one is deciding that you were wrong about your whole life.
You do not control the timing. You do control the preparation. So keep preparing, and check your priorities while you wait.
Try this today. Name the one thing you can prepare while you wait.
Live Your Life, and Let Them Live Theirs
God has given us life to live on our terms. He wants us not to disturb others about how they live their life. We make our life the way we want, and we alone are responsible for what life offers us.
Two ideas sit inside this short quote, and the second one is harder.
The first is easy to accept. Your life is yours to live on your terms.
The second is that their life is theirs. He says we should not disturb others about how they live. That includes the people we love and worry about most. Much of the advice we give is worry, not help.
Then the sharp line. We alone are responsible for what life offers us. That can hurt on a bad day. But read it again. If your choices built this part, your choices can build the next part too.
Try this today. Let one person make a choice you disagree with, and say nothing.
God Is Just Like Facebook
God is just like Facebook. He reads everyone's posts and comments. He accepts everyone's friend request. He allows people to delete Him, but He will not usually delete anyone from His friend list. Sometimes He removes a person when the friendship has ended for a real reason. For true souls, He comes online to chat. He likes everyone's posts and leaves a comment with love and gratitude.
Everybody knows the feeling of sending a friend request.
You press the button, and then you wait. Maybe they accept. Maybe they see your name, think for a second, and leave it there. Maybe nothing happens for a month, and then you stop checking, because you have quietly understood the answer.
Now read what Tej wrote, because it is one of the warmest things in this book.
God is just like Facebook. He accepts everyone's request.
Everyone. Not only the good people. Not only the ones who pray correctly, or often, or in the right building. He does not read your history first. The request is accepted, and it was accepted before you sent it.
Look at the rest of the comparison, piece by piece. Every piece is doing work.
He reads everyone's posts and comments. That means the small ones too. Not only the prayer you make in an emergency. Also the ordinary complaint after a long day, said to nobody in the kitchen. Somebody read it.
He allows people to delete Him. This is the line that surprises readers. Tej gives you full permission to leave. You can be angry. You can stop believing. You can close the whole account. Nothing stops you, and nothing punishes you.
But He will not usually delete anyone from His list. The leaving works in one direction only. Your side of the friendship can end. His side stays open, quietly, for as long as it takes.
For true souls, He comes online to chat. That is the difference between being read and being spoken to. Most of us have only ever posted. A few people describe something closer, and Tej is one of them. He does not explain it, and he does not ask you to believe it.
Then comes the last part, which is the best one. He likes everyone's posts, and He leaves a comment with love and gratitude.
Gratitude. Read that word again. In his picture, God is grateful to you.
Why does this page work so well?
Because it takes something enormous and distant, and describes it with something you touched this morning. You do not need religion to understand a friend list. You already know how acceptance feels. You already know the silence of posting into an empty room.
That is also where the page stays open for everybody.
If you believe in God, this is a friendly picture of Him, and a true one. If you do not, the page still describes something real that you have needed. The experience of being read. Of saying the small honest thing, and learning that it did not disappear.
Most people spend the whole day performing. The version of you that other people see is edited, the way a post is edited. Tej is describing the opposite of that. Somewhere your unedited version is already read, already accepted, already liked.
You do not have to send the request again.
It was accepted a long time ago.
Someone Saw It First
The person who knows something worthwhile is inside him is the one God sends to make you see the truth.
Think of the person who first told you that you were capable of something.
You probably did not believe them. You may have thought they were only being polite. But you remembered the sentence, and here you are, still carrying it.
Tej says that person was sent. They saw something in you before you could see it, because they had already found it in themselves.
That second half matters. A person who has never found anything worthwhile inside themselves cannot point to it in you. They would not know what they were looking at. Encouragement like this only comes from someone who found it in themselves first.
Two things follow from that. Look for those people, and stay near them. And accept that you are now that person for somebody else, whether or not you feel ready for it.
Someone is waiting to hear from you what you once needed to hear.
Try this today. Tell one person what you can see in them.
Back to contentsChapter 10 — Love Is the Strongest Energy
Love is not a feeling you wait for. It is a thing you send out. Many people treat love as weather. You wait for it. It arrives, or it does not. Someone loves you, or nobody does, and you have no part in it.
You do have a part in it. Love is not only a thing you receive. It is a thing you do, and you can start today.
Tej uses the word energy often. That word can sound strange in a book like this, so here is what it means in plain, physical terms. Walk into a room where two people have been fighting. You feel it before anyone speaks. Walk into a room where someone is glad you came. You feel that too. What a person carries inside reaches other people. They cannot see it. They can feel it.
None of this is about waiting to be loved. One question matters more. What do people feel when you walk in?
This is love in the widest sense. Family, friends, strangers in a queue, and yourself.
Ten pages. Most are short. Two ask more of you.
Two Kinds of People
A person without love in his heart is a person without substance. There are only two types of Frequencies.
He says there are only two kinds. That sounds hard, until you see what he is counting.
Some people bring something into a room. A word, a look, a little warmth. Other people bring nothing. They are not cruel. They are closed, and often tired.
You have met both. You still remember the first kind years later. You forget the second by evening.
You are one of these two today. Not for life. Today. And you get to choose again tomorrow morning.
Try this today. Give one warm word to the first person you meet.
What Love Gives You
Love gives us strength, peace, hope and a focussed mind. Love gives comfort. Love overcomes fear. Love accepts you the way you are. Love makes us smile and laugh. Love reminds us of the happy moments in our past. Love asks us to enjoy this moment with gratitude, to be happy with what we have, and to expect nothing.
Read that list again slowly. Strength, peace, hope, comfort, and a mind that can hold still.
People chase those things in other ways. Some chase money for them. Some chase a title at work. Tej says love already carries all of them.
The last line is the hard one. Expect nothing. Love that expects something is not a gift. It is a bill. And people can feel the difference at once, long before anyone says a word about it.
So give the warmth, then drop the expectation. Whatever comes back is a gift.
Try this today. Do one kind thing and expect nothing for it.
Say It About Yourself First
I love myself. I love the people around me. I love my life. I love this day. I love the universe for giving me the things I asked for. I can feel my heart shining with love. I live in a country of love, and all I know is to share love, happiness and blessings with everyone who comes my way.
He wrote this line with a small heart symbol in place of the word love, again and again. Here it is set as the word, so it reads the same in every book and on every screen.
Now look at the order he uses. He starts with himself. Then the people near him. Then his life, then this day.
That first step sounds proud. It is not. You cannot give away what you do not have. A person who is hard on himself all day is rarely soft with anyone else, whatever he intends.
Try this today. Say one kind, true sentence about yourself.
What You Carry Into a Room
You are a bundle of energy. Everything around you is energy. When you focus on one source of energy, a strong flow of it comes to you. It lifts you or pulls you down, depending on what that energy is. Love energy is the most sacred energy, and we all need it. It heals your whole body without any medicine, and it is everywhere. Always imagine that love energy is being poured over you, and that God is blessing you.
Two rooms will show you what he means.
In the first, two people have just finished an argument. Nobody tells you this. You walk in and you know. The air feels tight. You speak more quietly than you meant to.
In the second, someone looks up and is glad you came. Their face changes when they see you. You sit down and your shoulders drop.
Nothing was said in either room. You knew both in one second.
That is what he means by energy. It is not a strange or hidden thing. It is what you carry, all day, without trying. Your face carries it. Your voice carries it. The way you answer a simple question carries it. People read it long before they hear your words.
Now the useful part.
He says you become like the energy you focus on. Test that against your own week. Spend an hour with a person who complains about everything, and you leave tired, having done nothing yourself. Spend an hour with a person who is warm to you, and you leave lighter, having done nothing there either. Same hour, same clock, different result.
So the people you sit with matter. So does what you feed your mind: the news you read, the messages you answer, the video you watch before you sleep. None of it is neutral. Each one leaves a little of itself in you.
He then says love is the strongest of these, and that it heals the body without medicine.
Be careful here, and be honest. He is not telling you to refuse a doctor. Take the medicine. But you already know the other half is true. A sick person who is loved carries the illness better. Pain in an empty room is worse than the same pain with a hand on your arm. Any nurse will tell you this. So will anyone who has waited alone.
Then comes his practice, and it is a real one. Imagine love being poured over you, like warm water over your head.
You may feel foolish doing this. Do it anyway, for one minute, in a quiet place. You are choosing what to fill yourself with, instead of letting the day fill you with whatever it happens to hold. Most people never choose. They open their eyes, reach for the phone, and take whatever arrives.
The change does not stay inside you. That is what makes it worth doing. A person who feels held is patient in a slow queue. A person who feels empty is not. Your family gets whatever you walked in with.
He says this love is everywhere, and that God is blessing you with it. You may read that word as God. You may read it as the ordinary kindness in the world, which is also everywhere and also free. Both readings lead to the same door.
Tomorrow someone will walk into a room where you are. In one second, before you say a word, they will feel what you are carrying.
You cannot hide it. You only get to choose what it is.
Find the Reason Yourself
Meet me and you will get love. If you do not give me a reason to love you, I will find one myself. Our thoughts often pull us away from love.
Read the second line again. He does not wait for a reason to love you. If you do not give him one, he will find one himself.
Most of us do the opposite. We keep a quiet list of reasons why a person does not deserve our warmth. He was rude in March. She never replied. The list grows, and we call it being fair.
You can drop the list. Not for them. For you. It is heavy to carry, and it changes your face.
Try this today. Pick one person you find hard. Find one true reason to like them.
An Ocean, Not a Cup
I'm an ocean full of love. By stepping in, your heart will be cleansed.
Have you ever stood at the edge of the sea?
You can take as much water as you want. Fill your hands. Fill a bucket. Fill a hundred buckets and carry them home. The sea does not get smaller. It does not watch you leave. It does not ask when you are coming back.
Now compare how most of us love.
We love like a cup. There is a certain amount in there, and we can see the level. So we measure. We give some to this person, less to that one, and we keep a little back in case we need it later. We are careful, because a cup can become empty.
That fear is the reason for a lot of small, cold behaviour. You do not say the warm sentence, in case they do not say it back. You do not call first. You wait to be invited. You quietly count who gave more.
Tej says something different about himself. He is an ocean. Not a cup.
An ocean has nothing to protect. Take from it and it is unchanged. You can test that in your own life. Recall the last time you were truly kind to someone. Did it leave you with less? Or did you walk away with more than you came with?
Love is not a thing you have a fixed amount of. It grows in the giving. This is why the ocean is the right picture and the cup is the wrong one.
Now the second half of what he says. By stepping in, your heart will be cleansed.
Look at who moves. The sea does not chase anyone up the beach. It stays where it is, open, all day and all night. The person has to walk into the water.
This is true of people too. You cannot force your love on someone who is not ready, and trying to will only frighten them. You can only be the kind of person who is easy to come near. Steady. Warm on a day when nothing is happening. There, when they finally decide to speak.
And cleansed is a good word, so keep it. Salt water cleans a wound. It also stings for a moment.
Being loved is like that for many people. If you have gone years with very little of it, open warmth is uncomfortable at first. You wonder what the person wants from you. You wait to be asked for something. Then, slowly, you stop waiting, and something old in you loosens.
If that is you, be patient with yourself. Let it sting, and stay in the water.
If it is not you, remember it about others. When your kindness makes someone uneasy, they are not refusing you. They are learning something nobody taught them.
Be the sea for them anyway. Say the warm thing again next week.
The water is still there tomorrow, in the same place, at the same hour. It never once counted what anyone took.
Love Is Easy to See
The feeling of love is clear. When you want to see and feel something new in your life, flow with the force of love.
You always know. When a person means it, you hear it in three words. When they do not mean it, polite language hides nothing.
That is true of you too. Nobody is fooled by your good manners on a day when your heart is shut, however carefully you choose the words. And nobody misses it when you are honestly glad to see them.
So stop trying to say it well. Say it plainly. Plain and true is better than clever, every time.
Try this today. Tell one person, in simple words, what you like about them.
Choices, Not Chances
Get yourself aligned with the feeling of love and leave everything else. Have faith in God and hope for the best life coming your way. God does not want us to live a miserable life. He gives us choices to make, not chances.
Look at his last line. God gives us choices, not chances.
A chance is a thing you wait for. It is luck, a door that opens on its own. People can spend years waiting for one.
A choice is already in front of you, and it is smaller than you think. Answer that message. Say sorry first. Sit with your mother for an hour and leave the phone in another room.
The good life he speaks about is not delivered to you. It is built from small choices, one at a time.
Try this today. Name one thing you have been calling a chance. Then make it a choice.
What Gets Inside You
When you carry thoughts of love, peace, happiness and gratitude, you are following the natural laws properly. In this state of mind you are at your strongest, because bad influences cannot reach you.
This is not about pretending. Bad days still come. The question is what gets inside you and stays there.
Think of a rude message. If you are full of good things, you read it, you feel it, and it is gone by evening. If you are empty, the same message stays for a week. It follows you into your sleep.
So fill that space on purpose. Good thoughts are not weak. They are what stop the small poisons from staying.
Try this today. Before you sleep, name three good things from today.
Say It Out Loud
Always have an expressive mind and a loving heart.
This is his shortest line, and it asks for two things.
A loving heart is easy to admire. The expressive mind is the one most of us skip. Love that stays inside your head does no work in the world. Nobody is warmed by a kind thought you never said.
You feel something real for your parents, or for your closest friend. Now count how much of it you have actually said to them, out loud, in plain words.
Say it while they can hear you.
Try this today. Tell one person what they mean to you, before the day ends.
Back to contentsChapter 11 — Nothing Stays the Same
Every hard thing is teaching you something. Some seasons of life are heavy.
You may be in one now. Work is hard, or money is short, or someone you love is unwell. You wake and the weight is still there. A quiet voice tells you that this is how life will be from now on.
It will not be.
Nothing in your life has stayed the same yet. Not the good years, and not the bad ones. The season you are in will also move. That is not a promise that everything gets fixed. It is a smaller and truer thing. You will not always feel the way you feel today.
Some hard things do teach you something. Some simply have to be lived. Both are allowed, and nothing is asking you to decide today which of the two you are living through. What happens inside you while you wait matters more than the label.
Five short pages. They ask less of you than the pages before them.
Some Phases Change You
We pass through different phases, events and circumstances in our life. They change the frequency of the energy body in which we exist. Those who are able to stabilize at this frequency are experienced awakened souls, and those who cannot are still in the learning process.
Think of yourself five years ago.
Not the big facts. The small ones. What worried you that year. What you agreed to. What made you angry, and how long the anger stayed.
Some of that person is gone. You did not decide to change, and yet life happened to you and left you slightly different.
That is what this quote is about, under the long words.
He says we pass through phases, and that they change something in us. He calls it the frequency of the energy body. Those are his words, and borrowing them is not the point. The plain version is this. A hard year does not leave you where it found you.
Then he says something kinder than it first sounds. Some people settle into the change. Others are still learning. He calls the first group awakened souls. He does not say the second group failed. He says they are learning.
That matters, because most of us are in the second group. Nobody is calm on the first day. He is describing a slow change, not a decision you make in one morning.
Here is what settling looks like in ordinary life.
A man loses his job. For a year he is angry every morning. He argues at home. He applies for work he does not want. Then something in him quiets. He is not happy about what happened. But he stops fighting the fact that it happened. He starts from where he actually is.
You may know a person like this. You may be him.
He did not become a better person. He became a person who has stopped arguing with last year.
That is all settling means. Not calm. Not wise. Only this: no longer fighting a thing that is already done.
Now the part people get wrong.
You cannot force it to happen faster. Some people take a month. Some take five years. The time it takes is not a measure of how strong you are. It depends on how deep the cut was, how much help you had, and how tired you already were.
So do not measure yourself against a calm person. You cannot see which phase they are in, or how long they have been in it. You are looking at the outside of a life.
There is one small thing you can do while you wait. Notice what has already changed in you. Most people miss their own progress, because it arrives slowly, and slow change is invisible from the inside.
Think again of yourself five years ago. That person could not have carried this year. You can. Not because you are stronger by nature, but because the years since then did their work on you. You never felt it happening. You only see it when you look back.
This Will Change Too
Everything that happens in your life is temporary. We take it as permanent, and hold on to what has just happened. Your mood changes in response to the events occurring in your life. What really matters is how you take those events. Positively or negatively?
Think of the worst week you had five years ago.
You may remember the facts. Most people cannot get the feeling back. It was total at the time. It filled every hour. Now it is a story you can tell in two sentences.
That is his first line. Everything that happens is temporary.
His second line is the useful one. We take it as permanent, and we hold on to what has just happened.
He is not criticising you. A mind simply works this way. When something good happens, we plan the whole year around it. When something bad happens, we believe it is now the shape of things. Both feel completely true at the time. Both are today, painted over the rest of the year.
Then he asks his question. How do you take those events? Positively or negatively?
That question is easy to read badly. It can sound like an order to smile. It is not, and you should not read it that way. You can call a hard thing hard. Nobody is asking you to be grateful for pain, and nobody should.
The honest version is smaller. On most days you have a little room. Not much. A little. What you do inside that small room is yours.
Some days the room is only this wide: you get up, you do one useful thing, and you are kind to one person. In a hard season, that is a full day of work. It counts. You do not have to feel positive to live well. You only have to keep choosing the small right thing while you feel bad.
Now, if you are in a hard season while you read this, here is what you cannot see from inside it.
You have already survived every hard season you have had. Every single one. At the time you did not know how you would, and then the weeks passed and somehow you did. Not luck, and not strength. It is a record, and it is yours. Look at it on the days when today tells you that you cannot manage.
The pain was real each time. You were right about that. You were only wrong about how long it would stay.
One day this year will be a year you describe in one sentence. You cannot imagine that today. You could not have imagined it last time either.
So take the smallest possible promise from this page. Not that it will all make sense. Not that it was worth it. Only this: it will not always feel like this.
Somewhere ahead of you there is an ordinary morning. You wake, and this is not the first thing you think of. The light is grey, the day is nothing special, and you are all right.
You cannot see that morning from here. It is there.
The Same Thing, a Second Time
Many people react a lot on a life event without learning from it. Self realization and understanding the event would help you to be stronger and wiser. Then you can face the event in the right way if it happens again.
Something goes wrong, and you react. That is normal, and it is not a fault.
But the reaction is where most of us stop. We tell a friend. We feel it fully. Then the week moves on and nothing is different.
Tej asks for one more step, and only when you are ready for it. Later, when it is quieter, look at what happened. Not to blame yourself. Only to understand it.
Then, if it comes again, you are not meeting it for the first time.
Try this today. Think of one thing that upset you last month. Ask what you know now that you did not know then.
You Are Bigger Than the Problem
When you have learnt something in your life, you will be guided by what you have learnt. If you are unwilling to learn, then your reaction will be the same, and you will blame others for whatever happens to you. Learning and doing what you know will help you grow. Knowing some of the secrets of life lets you build the life of your choice. You take risks, believe in yourself, and find the courage to face your fears. You are much bigger than your problems, and you can overcome them. Just believe in the Almighty.
Read his second sentence again. If you refuse to learn, your reaction stays the same. So the same trouble arrives, you meet it with the same tools, and you blame another person again. Nothing in the story moves.
He ends with faith, and he ends with you. You are bigger than your problems.
That is easy to doubt on a bad day. So do not argue with it. Test it against your own history instead. Every problem you were once certain would break you is now behind you, and you are here, reading this.
Try this today. Name one problem from your past that you were sure you could not survive.
Wait Before You Answer
Being happy and calm under all circumstances, and reacting less, gives you time to think. You learn why something happened to you, and you find the way to overcome the problem. All this happens to teach you a lesson, so that you can move on. Hope for a fresh new day, with happy moments to cherish.
A strong reaction takes all the space. While you are angry there is no room to think, and thinking is what you need most.
He is not asking you to feel calm. He is asking you to wait a little before you answer. That is a smaller thing, and you can do it even while you are still upset.
He says these events come to teach you. You may not believe that today, and that is fine. You are allowed to simply get through it. Even then, waiting before you answer costs you nothing.
Then his last line, which is the gentlest one. Hope for a fresh new day.
Try this today. When something annoys you, count to ten before you speak.
Before You Close This Book
You have reached the last page.
Look at what this book actually asked of you. Say the kind sentence you were only thinking. Wait ten seconds. Ask the second question after someone says they are fine. Thank a person who was good to you years ago.
None of that needs money. None of it needs a better year than the one you are having. That was deliberate. Large changes are built out of small ones, and small ones are the only kind you can start today.
You will not remember most of these pages. That is fine. Remember one. The page that arrived on a day you needed it is the one that was yours.
And if you are reading this in a hard season, take only this with you. It will not always feel like this. You do not have to be positive about it. No lesson is due from you today. You only have to get through it, and you are already doing that.
Nothing here was new to you. You knew most of it already. The book only put it in front of you on a day when you could hear it.
Now close the book. Somewhere in your day there is a person who needs one kind sentence, and you already know how to say it.
Back to contentsAbout Tej
The person behind these pages, and where to find him.My full name is Tejas Patel. Most people call me Tej, and that is the name I write under.
For years I have been writing short pieces about the mind, about people, and about how to have a calmer day. Everything in this book was first published on my own website, tejaspatel.me, where I am still writing.
Writing is only one half of my work.
The other half is Wisdom Healing Center. I work in the pranic healing tradition taught by Grand Master Choa Kok Sui. I have been giving distant healing and meditation sessions since 2015. Distant means what it sounds like. You do not need to be in the same room as me, or even in the same country. I also work with crystals, and I teach simple meditation to people who have never tried it before.
The two halves come from the same place. A page like the ones in this book can show you something. A session is for the days when seeing it is not enough on its own.
If something here stayed with you, you are welcome to write to me. I read what people send.

One Last Thing
If a page in this book helped you, please tell one person about it.
Not a review. One real person you know, who is having a hard week. This is a quiet book and it travels the way quiet things do, from one person to the next.
That would mean more to me than anything else you could do.
